WELL GLORY HALALUYA, I'VE GOT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Here's what I did:  Restarted my computer in safe mode and clicked on "Last Known Configuration that Worked."  I then reloaded new sound drivers again (REALTECK AC97) and low and behold sound came back............

That's all I know.

We'll see how long it last but for now I am one happy camper !

Again my personal thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to this post.  If I could I'd buy you all a beer !

Sincerely,

RT

If the 'Volume Control' (SNDVOL32.EXE) started to work again but there is no sound, then check the following:

    1. Check and remove any tick on 'Mute' and 'Mute all' below any control in 'Volume Control' (SNDVOL32.EXE).
    2. If you have multichannel output then try using Stereo (2.0) in Speaker setup, in 'Sounds and Audio Devices' and also in sound card's control panel.
    3. Check that the audio cable is connected in the Green colored Jack, and turn off any jack sensing or jack remapping option in sound card's control panel.
    4. Open 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in Control Panel. In the 'Sounds' Tab, play a sound scheme. If it works then your media player might be the problem.

If any of the above steps does'nt work. Try reinstalling sound drivers. To get exact model & version of sound card you can use 'Unknown Devices' software:

    'Unknown Devices' by Halfdone: http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/

If you use an Add-On sound card and you also had an integrated sound card on mainboard, then disable the integrated one from BIOS first and use the audio jack of the Add-On sound card and not of the integrated one.

In my post above i said: 'First uninstall any .NET Framework versions ABOVE .NET Framework 3.0 ...' by which i meant to uninstall any versions after 3.0 and not before it. Actually in my situation i did recently installed .NET Framework 3.5 and 'K-Lite Codec Pack' both at the same time and also used 'Codec Tweak Tool' packaged with the Codec Pack, after which the error occurred when i use 'Volume Control' (SNDVOL32.EXE). So i thought that maybe these both programs created this problem.

However, after reading Ashton M quote above, i reinstalled .NET Framework 3.5 and the problem did'nt occurred, so there was no need to uninstall .NET Framework at the first place.

SO, DON'T UNINSTALL ANY .NET FRAMEWORK VERSIONS as it is not related to this error. Only registry tweaking can solve the error. Mine problem was as same as this post tells, so i told the same steps that i did by which my problem was fixed.

If the 'Volume Control' (SNDVOL32.EXE) started to work again but there is no sound, then check the following:

    1. Check that there is no checkmarks on 'Mute' and 'Mute all' below any control in 'Volume Control' (SNDVOL32.EXE).
    2. If you have multichannel output then try using Stereo (2.0) in speaker setup.
    3. Check that the audio cable is connected in the Green colored Jack.
    4. Open 'Sounds and Audio Devices' from Control Panel. In the 'Sounds' Tab play a sound scheme. If it works then your media player need to be reinstalled.

If any of the above steps does'nt work. Try reinstalling sound drivers. To get exact model & version of sound card you can use 'Unknown Devices' software:

    'Unknown Devices' by Halfdone: http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/

If you use an Add-On sound card and you also had an integrated sound card on mainboard then disable the integrated one from BIOS first and use the audio jack of the Add-On sound card and not the integrated one.

For the EasyFix solution you need to copy the registry code which is between the two ------- lines, paste in a textfile using Notepad and save it with any name with a .reg extension (replace .txt with .reg when using 'Save As...' option in Notepad). Closed Notepad and then double-click the saved reg file and select 'Yes' in a window that appears to add the entries into the registry.

I hope this helps, and sorry for the late reply.

    Could try:

    1. Complete uninstall of Realtek AC97 sound and revert to Windows sound drivers.

Clean Boot deal includes temporarily doing this.

    1. Boot Windows using Safe Boot options (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222)  Instead of F2 or F12 press F8.

I see  a point in trying Last Known Configuration or Enable Boot Logging.

    1. Check if any 64-bit only drivers or programs.  Do only 32bit or only 64bit games work?
    2. Buy and install Windows Xp 64-bit SP2.  Unlike Intel, your AMD64 would still run anything 32bit just fine.
