APPLICATION ERROR

I lost all sound on my computer.  When I try to click on the sound volumn icon on my desk top I get the following error message:

 SNDVOL32.EXEC APPLICATION ERROR

The application failed to initalize properly(0xc0000005)

I have already downloaded new sound drivers off the internet but that didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas out there?  Pleae help..........  I need my sound back on.

WELL GLORY HALALUYA, I'VE GOT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Here's what I did:  Restarted my computer in safe mode and clicked on "Last Known Configuration that Worked."  I then reloaded new sound drivers again (REALTECK AC97) and low and behold sound came back............

That's all I know. 

We'll see how long it last but for now I am one happy camper !

Again my personal thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to this post.  If I could I'd buy you all a beer !

    Having the same problem guys. Only i have noticed it is happening on another program. Trying to use Sony Media Go gets the same problem. I am gonna try to find out what files both the programs/applications use and see if remplaceing them helps. I have also read about a Panda virus mabey doing this. But my PC is 2 weeks old and i have had the problem from day 3. Will keep you all posted.

    Yeah, it's kind of tiresome to have to keep doing new installations, then not knowing how or if the problems will just pop up out of nowhere (twice). Having to reinstall all of your programs again, man it's tiring.

    I hope that we can get some type of indication of what actually helps run some applications. All of my other programs work normally, but my Canon lide's mpnex20.exe still gives the error, and so does the sound control panel. I can't think of anything else at all that I can try to solve it.

    EDIT: Now the latest version of Yahoo messenger is giving the error.

    Haven't had time to try any of the new solutions.  They don't sound promising.  Probably won't be able to try them until next year since I'll be on vacation.

    In any case, I would not recommend reinstalling XP from scratch... it is a very painful long process depending on how old your PC is.  I did it once before.  Loading all the SPs, updates, and programs including IE.  If you do decide to do it, make sure you backed up all your personal stuff and make a list of the programs you need to load (URLs, etc.).

    Thanks Mary.  I also tried each of the solutions you listed but none would work for me.  Couldn't get the "clean boot" to work as kept getting an error message about "didn't have administrator privileges."  This is of course not so as I am the only user of the computer and DO HAVE

    administrator rights.

    Hope there is something else we can try as I know Feruken needs help as well.  It would help me to understand just what an application error is in the first place and perhaps can only be fixed by a computer engr.

    If there is anything else you can think of please let us know.  In the mean time thanks for all your help and best wishes for a very Merry Christmas.

    PS:  I'm thinking about doing a re-install of my Windows XP from the disk that came with the computer.  How can I be sure this will correct the problem with the sound?  Any advice...........?????
