I have a video clip that was taken with a digital camera, but they took it on a 90 degree angle of normal, like you take a picture, but I can't find a way to rotate the video frame like you can with a picture.  Is that possible??

Its fairly simple guys, i just worked it out:

1] Open the video in WIndows Live Movie Maker

2] Hit the Rotate Right icon

3] You can either upload direct to Youtube or Facebook  OR

4] Click SAVE MOVIE icon and click "For Computer"

The file saves as WMV format.

Good luck

  1. Open the video or project in Windows Live Movie Maker
  2. Go to the "Home" tab
  3. In the tool bar at the top look in the "Editing" group. There you will see Rotate Left and Rotate Right icons. Click on either of them until your video is the correct orientation.

4 Save. You're done!

I'm using Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 build 15.4.3538.0513. Download it for free here: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

Hello Ski Patrol,

Thank you for posting.   There is no way to rotate the video in Windows Media Player, but the Video can be edited in Windows Movie Maker.  Movie Maker has an option to rotate the video.

Please let me know if this is a helpful option for you and I can guide you through the steps to do it in Movie Maker.

Hello devonnoved and 21Xochi,

To rotate frame in Movie Maker, on the menu bar select Tools> Effects. The effects are in aphabetical order. There is a Rotate 90, Rotate 180 and Rotate 270.

There are also a Mirror, Horizontal, Vertical to flip the image. Hope this helps you all. Make it a great day

I am a complete novice on video editing, and was trying to get an upside down .mov file into a Camtasia movie. I must admit that I thought, "This is why people get Macs."

After an hour of downloading tools and researching how to flip a video, I saw the post about using Windows Live Movie Maker. I simply opened my video with Movie Maker from a folder and clicked a couple times to translate it into a Camtasia-compatible wmf. Then, with ONE click on an icon in Movie Maker, bingo - it flipped perfectly.

Nothing I tried was easier than the Microsoft products I already had installed - not even close. If you think you need to look in a manual then you haven't tried it. In this case the Microsoft products couldn't have been better- especially compared with learning how to use iTunes or any other UI completely foreign to me.

The question of "by and large" is another one. Here, Microsoft gets credit due. Their tools surprised and delighted me with their simplicity and effectiveness.

Why don't we call a truce and pick a different target for our ire like, say, Adobe. Have you ever tried using Illustrator or InDesign? Now those folks are really from a different planet.
