Hi Nikki 801,

Can you please attempt these steps?  Please be very cautious when editing the registry.  If you would please not delete anything just yet.  If you would please perform the following steps....If Upper and Lower Filters is not within this Registry Key, please simply exit the registry.

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start

Collapse this imageExpand this image

, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. 2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM. 3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete. 4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry. 5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete. 6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry. 7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

If you would please follow up with me at your earliest convenience, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Aaron Griffin

    Hi there

    I have had this problem since i purchased this Sony vaio laptop, when i enter a disk either a dvd or cd it makes a load of noise then stops then repeats this over and over - not really doing anything at all but making a noise? i've never understood this and never thought it important as at the time was simply to play music, I now run myown business from home and really love my laptop as its reliability is second to none -except for this disk drive? i really need this disk drive to be working now and really cant be without it or i'll have to purchase another laptop or home desktop pc, This i would rather avoid! i have tried tofollow these instructions however when i get into (regedit) it only gives me the option HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE? I cannot right click on upper filters? i'm so lost and confused and very much need some step by step help

    PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME

    Thank you

    Excellent, Aaron. Mine was the same problem, and thanks to you (and Niki), the drive is recognized and works once more. There was no LowerFilters shown, so I only had to delete the UpperFilters. Apparently this is a fairly common and long-standing issue. You'd think Microsoft would recognize it an apply the solution when Windows went in search of the problem. Instead they just say "your current driver is the best," but are unable to start it due to the registry problem.

    I tried http://support.microsoft.com/gp/hardware_device_problems  and ran "MrFixit," first, to no avail. Your recipe met the Signal Corps' "CCC" message requirements (Clear, Concise, Complete), for the most part,"Collapse this imageExpand this image ," and its twin, being the only puzzling portions. LOL.

    I really don't have to have this drive, I've got three others, one a USB device, but I like to see everything working the way it should.

    Whoa... what a troublesome device... I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (i.e., DV6700) which has been upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium.  I upgraded back in October 2010.  As of Feb 15 (or thereabouts), my CD/DVD player has stopped.

    In the Device Manager, there is no evidence of a CD/DVD Player.  However, when I tried troubleshooting using HP Support Assistant, I choose "TROUBLESHOOT" and then "STORAGE DEVICES" -- the program correctly reports my hard disk; however, when I click on the "OPTICAL DRIVES" tab, it reports -

    DRIVE = 1

    MODEL = DVD RW AD-7560A

    MANUFACTURER = Optiarc

    FIRMWARE = DH10

    I was able to (using REGEDIT) remove the UpperFilters entry (although a LowerFilters entry did not exist) and rebooted.

    There did not appear to be any change in status.

    I am able to push the button and eject the device.  When I close the device (with a CD inserted), I hear some reading activity... but nothing beyond that.

    I have tried with numerous CDs and DVDs... it does not seem to be a media problem...

    Please help...
