Windows update service not running

Today I tried running windows update and ran into a problem saying that windows update service might not be running and i need to restart my computer but after many restart its still not running.

edit: sorry I forgot to include that info my first post

windows 7 64 bit upgrade from vista 64

Mcafee security center 1 year subcription

I dont shutdown my computer its 24/7 my last windows update install was 01/13/2010. The automatic update service is not in the services.msc

If you get the error message that the update service is not running, the first thing to check is that the service is on automatic. If it is, then go to your automatic updates settings, and turn them completely off. It's the "not recommended" setting, never check for updates. After you have set updates to this, go to the control panel and manually check for updates. It worked well for me; it checked for the updates, installed them, and afterwards I could set it to automatic updates and it worked. This was on a Windows 7 system.

Thanks all for the support! But I think its a corruption problem and as I am looking into windows 7 programs some of them are not working anymore. so i decided to put in the win 7 dvd and did another upgrade from win 7 itself and it worked now after 4 hours of reinstallation

No. I forgot to put that info in. This is a custom build running Windows 7 64 bit pro, service pack 1. The last time I ran windows update was 1/24/12, but that was only 2 days before I unplugged it and boxed it up to move. I just got it out of the box to find some how update isn't working. I restored it to the last restore I made right before I boxed it up and that didn't work either.

My antivirus is AVG free 2012, it does not expire.

The other antivirus programs that were on there were norton (way back when it was running vista 32 bit home basic), microsoft security essentials, and previous versions of AVG free.

The hard drive was scalped out of my emachine, that's why it had vista to begin with. So the age of the hard drive is about 8 1/2 years. The win 7 was put on only a year ago and it was not an upgrade, it was a clean install. Windows did keep my old programs and files though.

The listed updates were all there before I installed win 7.

I have what ever the last java update was in January, I will have to check to see what that is when I get home.

I believe adobe is v11, but it might be 10.

There are no other web browsers installed.

I have used a registry cleaner in the past, but not since mid January and update was still working at the end of January.
