XBOX 360 wireless receiver won't connect to controller with Windows 7 64bit

Hello, im having a problem with a xbox 360 wireless receiver on my windows 7 64bit, i installed the software that came with the receiver and it installed fine but when i went to connect the controller with the receiver it doesnt work, i've tried it dozens of times and i have rang microsoft for help but they werent too sure. Its a official controller which came with an xbox360 and the receiver isnt microsoft but i was told from the microsoft people that some receivers are made outside of microsoft but are still fine. I'm wondering if there is a specific windows 7 receiver driver for it?

hey thanks i got it to work! so relieved. heres how you do it:

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Microsoft Common Controller for Window Class

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]

Update Driver Warning

Click Yes

i cant believe it was that simple, you dont need to download any seperate driver or anything, just follow the steps.

    A guy on amazon.com called "J. Bodenlos" said that the device uses more power. He suggested some solution. Connect it to a USB PCI interface card, or an externally powered USB hub (not bus powored). He had right but I solved it by another way. What I did instead was making the cord shorter. The length has negative impact, higher resistance and more noise. Shorter cord gives it higher Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) which result in stability.

    You clearly didn't read the problem and just copy and pasted an irrelevant stock response. This is why people hate the Microsoft Help team, it's not just irritating to people with genuine problems but it is very unprofessional. The issue is not that the person (and myself) doesn't know how to connect a controller, it is that it will not connect. Why do Microsoft insist on making hardware and software that simply doesn't work or at very least takes a lot of time and effort to make work? I'll continue trying to make the hardware that I paid good money for, work without help from yourselves.

    RobHal, please note that the post you're replying to is almost 3 years old, and is no longer relevant.  Sure, MS support sucks--but I don't this is a good way to tell them as much.  We all "feel your pain" on this controller problem, though.  I hope you've since gotten yours working.  (See my previous post on page 3 for alternate instructions if James' don't work for you.)

    Hi, I tried the solution above but did not work on my Windows 8 64 bits. Is that suppose to work on Win 8 ???
