XBOX 360 wireless receiver won't connect to controller with Windows 7 64bit

hey thanks i got it to work! so relieved. heres how you do it:

Right click on Computer

Go to Properties

Click on Device Manager

Right click on the Unidentified Device

Go to Properties

Go to the Drive tab

Click on Update Driver…

Browse my computer for driver software

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Update Driver Warning

i cant believe it was that simple, you dont need to download any seperate driver or anything, just follow the steps.

I was having the same problem, and spent a long time pulling my hair out over it.  Here is how I made it work.  I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Edit: The INFCACHE.1 file is stored in a different place, depend on your version of Windows (XP, Vista, etc.).  Do a Google search for something like:

INFCACHE.1 location Vista

(replace Vista with your version) to find out where it is on your computer.

1. Uninstall all XBOX controller software and drivers.  Do this in Programs and Features in the Control Panel.
2. If you've already plugged in your controller or its receiver, you'll need to remove the generic drivers it's currently using (that don't work).  Plug in your controller and receiver, right-click on "Computer" in the start menu and click "Manage".  Select "Device Manager" on the left.  Right-click on the "unknown device" and select "Properties".  Go to the driver tab.  Click on "Uninstall".  Repeat for each "unknown device" that you see.  Un-plug your controller and all related devices when this is done.
3. Force Windows to rebuild the driver cache.  The file you need to delete is hidden, and system-protected, so you'll need to go into Folder Options (View tab) in the Control Panel and check the box for: "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives", then UNcheck the boxes for: "Hide Extensions for Known Files Types" and "Hide Protected Operating System Files".  Then go to "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore" and right-click on "INFCACHE.1".  Select "Properties" and click on the "Security" tab.  Click the "Edit" button.  Click on "Users" in the upper panel, then check the box for "Full Control".  Click "OK" in both windows.  Now right-click on "INFCACHE.1" and select "Delete".  This file will be rebuilt when it is needed.
4. Don't plug in your controller or receiver yet.  Download the XBOX 360 controller software from Microsoft.  Make sure you choose the software for your system (in my case, 64-bit Windows 7).  Install it by double-clicking on the file you downloaded.
5. When this is done, plugin only the WIRELESS RECEIVER for your XBOX controller.  Don't plug in the actual controller.  Windows will look for drivers and probably give you the same "driver not found" sort of message that you got the first time.  This is OK for now.  Wait for this to finish, then go back to the Device Manager and right-click on the "unknown device".  Click on Update Driver Software.  Click "Browse My Computer For Driver Software".  Click on "Let Me Pick From a List of Device Drivers on My Computer".
6. VERY IMPORTANT: in the next step, you'll be asked to choose which kind of device you have.  DO NOT PICK ONE!  Choosing a driver type at this stage will result in Windows refusing to recognize that the driver you'll pick next is valid for your device.  Instead, select "Show All Devices" at the top of the list.  Click "Next", and then click on "Have Disk".  Click on "Browse".
7. Now, navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories".  Select "Xusb21.inf" and then click "OK".  (The ".inf" part might not be shown in this window; if not, click the file that says "Xusb21" and click "OK".)  Now you should have a list of possible devices to choose from.  Select "XBOX 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows" and click "Next" or "OK" (whichever is available).  It will most likely give you a warning about this driver being wrong for your hardware.  Tell it to use the driver anyway.  In a few seconds, Windows will detect your receiver, and display it as "XBOX 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows"in the device manager.
8. Next, you need to push the button on the receiver, followed by the wireless button between the bumper buttons on the controller.  This button on the controller is hidden by the removable cord, so you'll need to disconnect the cord from the controller first.  On my own controller, the battery is basically dead, so I had to take further steps to make sure it connected.  I'll address those shortly.  If all goes well, your controller should now be detected, and show up as such in the Device Manager, as well as in the "Devices and Printers" section of the Control Panel.  You're now ready to play.
9. If, like mine, your controller won't hold a charge long enough to connect to the receiver using the above method, you'll have to connect it using the provided USB cable.  First, make sure the receiver is plugged in and working properly (and detected properly in the Device Manager).  Connect the cable to the controller, then to the PC.  The controller should now be recognized as an "XBOX 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit".  If this doesn't happen, you'll need to repeat the above steps for updating the device driver, for the controller.  The same Xusb21.inf file should be used.  Just for good measure, when I did this, I let the controller charge for a minute, then quickly unplugged the USB cable from the controller, pressed the button on the receiver, pressed the button on the controller, and plugged the USB cable back in.  This may or may not have actually been necessary.  At this point, your controller should be working and detected in the Device Manager and the Devices and Printers section of the Control Panel.  Happy gaming!
