Windows 7 I get Icons instead of pictures on Thumbnails

I have two programs "Cricut Design Studio" and "4D Embroidery System" both of which show the program icon on the thumbnail instead of the thumbnail picture itself. I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP Support yesterday (since my copy of Windows 7 is an OEM product) - they were unable to correct the problem. I am experiencing this same problem on my new desktop that has Windows 7 on it. I have tried all the usual fixes - eg. in folder options unchecking "Always show Icons not Thumbnails" and both checking and unchecking "Display file icon on thumbnails" - also in the Control Panel under System, Advanced System Settings, Advanced tab , Preformance settings, making sure the "Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked.

I have XP on my old desktop computer - the program icons display the pictures on the thumbnails correctly on that computer.

I can load those files onto a jump drive, plug that jump into my Windows 7, and the files on the jump show the thumbnail pictures correctly. If I transfer those files onto the computers with Windows 7 on them, they become icons of the program again (instead of pictures of the file). In Windows 7, I have all the latest updates, and both of the programs that I can't see the pictures on the thumbnails also have the latest updates, and are completely compatible with Win 7.

This is a real problem for me because I work with these files (over 10,000 of them) daily. The many of the file names are just numbers, so without the pictures, I can't tell which file to open. Please HELP!

The file icon size must be medium or large for the thumbnails to show. Small icons will only show thw generic thumbnail.

There must also be codecs installed to generate the thumbnails for the file types.

In Windows Explorer,

click on Organize - Folder and Search Options - View

uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails"

This worked for me: From the Start menu toolbar on your desktop, click on Pictures. Click on Tools, then click on Folder Options, and click on View. You will see a section called Files and Folders. Make sure that "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

I got the problem yesterday, and it was due to having filled the system drive (there was less than 100MB free), so Windows was unable to allocate enough space for the thumbnail caches. Freeing up some space fixed it.

(Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not have a don’t-cache-thumbnails option like XP did, so you either must cache them, or else not get thumbnails at all.)

Experienced Windows User - At a loss as to what is going on.

The answer to any of the obvious "did you try" questions is Yes, three times.

If anyone has any legit pointers I am all ears. Stats at bottom

About three days ago I started getting the icons instead of the Thumbnails, I have tried everything you can imagine, I even restored the system to an earlier point where I know for fact I had pics, I am designing a project and the main file has 5500 pics with non descriptive names, this is not good.

My exporer > folder and search options > View > Does not even have the always show icons never thumbnails listed in it all. I do have the show icons over thumbnails but it seems to do nothing.

I am running windows 7 ult 64 N, I have looked up articles, searched and searched again for over two days now. A full rebuild on my production machine takes about 33 hours, I could have had it done by now :( But I kept thinking there has to be an answer to this.....

One thing I feel it may have been caused by was the day before I found some junkware an employee had put on the system called Tweak 7. He swore he didn't make any changes with it, and I cannot see where it even has this effect as an option as I have researched it, plus restored to a point prior to its installation.

One other thing worth noting is that this computer, which it did one before, after a power failure (but I am on APC UPS so it was not a hard shutoff), windows starts back up and gives a repair start up or start normal option. If you choose start normal it will run on dos looking screen and say applying update 1 of 7697 and run through each number blazing fast. The first time I let it complete and as a result not one file on the whole pc would work or any program start. This happened this same day but I went for the hard reset button as soon as it did and it may have made it to 150 of 7667. Rebooted, repaired start up and everything except this icon photo issue seems fine.

I have researched hardware issues and can find nothing but I will list just in case.

Machine has a Bulldozer 3.6GHZ AMD Processor (all benchmarks are great)

32GB DDR3 1600 G. SKILL (benchmarks plus overnight MEMTEST all OK)

1TB HDD 7,200 RPM X3 All Seagates in Raid5

960GB Serial ATA SSD 2.5" OWC Mercury Electra X2

NVIDIA Quadro 6000 X2 SLI

Gigabyte 990FXA UD5

1200 Watt Thortech PSU

Water cooler built in case, thermaltake gt 7000 (I think maybe 10k?)

I dont see where anything matters but just in case running 2 lg bd burners and 2 lg multi blue ROM / dvd writers, I also have direct linked via USB 3 a small data center server of 12TB.
