dvd driver, corrupt in the registry

When I put a disc in the dvd drive it does nothing. When I go into My Computer it cannot see the drive.

When I look at the dvd drive in Device Manager it tells me,

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration  information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)  Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and  to see if there is a solution available."

When I do that it directs me to a page where I can spend $80 for Nero 9.

When I look up Code 19 at Microsoft it tells me that the registry information is corrupt and I will have to edit the registry, but where in the registry to edit or what to change it to it does not tell me.

 If I try to update the driver it tells me the driver is up to date and won't change it.

Am I right in thinking that if I simply uninstall the dvd drive and reboot Vista will automatically reinstall it and download the driver from the internet?

I thought that I had posted the solution.  The upper and lower filters need to be refreshed.  Here is a solution that I found on Adobe forums. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402306.html

Refresh the CD and DVD drivers list in the Windows registry.

To refresh the CD and DVD drivers list in the Windows registry:

Important: After you refresh the driver list in the Windows registry, you may need to reinstall any other CD or DVD burning applications on your computer. If you restart Windows after this procedure and other CD or DVD burning applications do not recognize the CD or DVD drive, then reinstall those applications.

  1. Uninstall your Adobe application.
  2. Open Registry Editor:
    • On Windows 2000 and XP: Choose Start > Run. Type regedit in the Open text box and click OK.
    • On Windows Vista: Choose Start. Type regedit in the Search text box, and press Enter.
  3. In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder.
  4. Select File > Export (Windows XP and Vista) or Registry > Export Registry File (Windows 2000).
  5. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, name the file (for example, CDDVDkey.reg), and click Save to save the file to the Desktop.
  6. In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
  7. Select the UpperFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
  9. Open Device Manager:
    • On Windows 2000 and XP: Choose Start > Control Panel. Double-click the System icon, click on the Hardware Tab, then click on Device Manager.
    • On Windows Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel, double-click System, then click Device Manager in the Tasks pane.
  10. Click on the plus symbol next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
  11. For each DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive listed, select the icon then choose Action > Uninstall.
  12. Restart Windows.
  13. Windows will automatically detect and reinstall your DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drives. You can verify that the drives are installed by viewing them in Device Manager (see step 9). If the drives are not present, open Device Manger and choose Actions > Scan For Hardware Changes.
  14. Reinstall your Adobe application.
  15. Restart Windows.

Important: If this solution doesn't resolve the problem with the application you reinstalled, then you should restore the CD and DVD drivers list in the Windows registry.

To restore the exported CD and DVD drivers list:

  1. Double-click the registry key you exported.
  2. Close the Registry Editor.
  3. Restart Windows.

That answer didn't work, it just came back saying the same thing.

So I tried System Restore again, using the same restore point I had the first time, and it worked.

No idea why.

    I have a very similar problem. I am currently running Windows 7 Professional (64bit) on an HP laptop with 8gb of memory. I was running Windows 7 Home Premium (64)bit, and recently upgraded to Professional. After I did the upgrade, I lost my DVD portion of my drive.  It will read and write CD's, but won't recognize DVD's. Blank or not.  NOthing else is different or changed, just the Home Premium to Professional upgrade.

    I had the same problem with Vista, before I upgraded to Windows 7.  I had intermittent problems just as I do now.

    The drive shows up in Device Manager. It shows up in Explorer and My Computer, ONLY if I have a CD in the drive. If I put a DVD in the drive it won't recognize it. It doesn't matter if it's a blank DVD, a commercial Video DVD or a Data DVD ie; My Streets and Trips 2010 DVD will not work to install the program.  I can't burn DVD's, but at times the drive will read a new blank DVD+R.

    I've exhausted all the bulletins, and other instructions I've found on Microsoft. Nothing has worked so far. 

    I don't burn DVD's very often, but it is very anoying not to be able to, and not to be able to install new software that comes in DVD format.

    I've exhausted HP's support system as well. THey say it's a Windows Problem and not the drive or computer. Both Microsoft and HP have told me to UPDATE the Drive Firmware, only there is no update available.  Version 2.00 from 2008 is the newest firmware available from the mfg....

    HP, Toshiba and other companies are using the same drive as what is in my laptop.  My older Toshiba laptop has the same drive model as my HP, and it works just fine with Windows 7 Professional......  My drive in my HP worked fine, until I upgraded it last week.

    Anyone have any thoughts or ideas ???????????????

    Hi,

    Code 19 means there is a driver conflict such as two devices trying to use the same resources.

    Stage 1 : Please do all the below even if you have done some before as it is often the total process which

    solves the issue.

    Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab - click

    Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL - REBOOT

    this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if drive is not shown continue below.

    Then work your way through these - remember the drive could be bad, could have a loose cable or

    slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

    Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then check cables in both

    ends. Remove and replace, do not just snug. For laptops you can often clean the power and

    data contacts with a pencil eraser.

    Some DVD drives do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the System maker and

    device maker to see if there is firmware or drivers for you drive if needed.

    Stage 2 : You could have drive issues as the CD/DVD is actually 4 drives in 1 case ( CD & DVD burn and

    CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 parts to not function while the others do so properly.

    Did you complete the troubleshooter for the drive that still does not work? There are some registry entries

    that the troubleshooter does not fix and those "might" be the cause.

    Check with your System Maker and Device maker for both possible firmware updates and the correct

    Registry entries for your drive.

    These are the keys I think are the ones in question - for the CD/DVD drive sub-keys of course as there will

    other sub-keys in these keys. Be sure to ask for specific keys involved as well as the settings.

    Alan: I have this problem, and have repeated the steps above. I upgraded XP pro to Vista Business. Windows won't accept my Product key, so here I am:

    1. This DVD/RW player installed Vista. All of the steps above have been done, and done again.

    2. Put in another DVD/RW player from an operational XP pro PC.  Same results, exactly.

    1. Put in original DVD/RW. Pioneer, the Manufacturer says the Driver is located in the DVD/RW device.
    2. Logged in as administrator with file modification permission, I try to delete Cdrom.sys.  "Permission Denied"
    3. F8 login with "C' promt: Try to delete Cdrom.sys....."Permission Denied"
