What does the error message "Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working" mean and how do I fix it??

This may be the solution you are seeking.

I recently removed the Vista Recovery Center malware from another one of our company laptops. It has ATI graphics installed. This malware hides most of the files on the PC in an attempt to fool you into thinking that your PC is really damaged like it is reporting. Removing the malware does not undo the hidden aspects. In Vista, the c:\Users*"your profile name (usually Owner)"* folder contains the AppData subdirectory that the Catalyst Control Center needs to access in order to function. When this directory is hidden, then CCC cannot locate the necessary files to launch. To fix this issue, I use the following steps.

Navigate to c:\ and right click on Users. Select properties. Under the General tab, look at the bottom for the Hidden selection. If there is not a check mark in the box, place a check mark there. Hit apply, select yes to apply to all subdirectories. If you clicked ok, you may notice that it disappeared from the right pane once it finishes. It should still be listed under the tree on the left. Right click on it again. This time remove the check mark and apply to all subdirectories. Once it has finished, your files in the Users directory should reappear and Catalyst Control Center should function normally again. This has worked in all cases that I have encounterd so far. Hopefully this works for you as well..

What the #@&%!!!!

This is making me mental. I'm not a cruncher, but not a moron either. Went to link, followed directions and it identified the version and started download. Problem is...it keeps downloading...forever!. at 64% it freezes and goes no further. Now what?

The initial problem was as described by others here and a buddy helped me uncheck the files and restore my hidden pix, doc's, etc...but I'm still getting the error mesg on my screen every time I boot up my laptop and it does seem a bit slower.

I'm running avast and spybot with kaspersky as an alternate. several checks and constant scans tell me that I'm clean so its just cheezing me off the see the window, and I swear it slows my download speed online.

Thoughts on this anyone?

Just wanted you all to know that downloading the drivers did not work for me and I worked with HP directly with them even taking over my computer and trying to fix it that way. For me I had to send my computer in and they had to replace the motherboard as the video card that the AMD drivers are for was intregated into the mother board and it had to be replaced. But...that has taken care of the issue and was glad it needed it while still under warranty. Thanks for all the information as it got me to contact them and have it taken care of.

"The answer tells me nothing. I need to be told the steps to fix problem like you are talking to a 10 year old child. You have to explain problem and 1-2-3- etc. steps to fix. Having the knowledge is worthless if you can not explain so a 10 year old understands."

With all due respect; If this is how you feel about the advice given, you may not be the right person to fix your own computer, and should ask someone to do it for you who can. Perhaps a 10 year old.

When you go online looking for tips such as this, there is a general understanding that you are computer literate enough to employ said help. If not, further googling will get you to sites that offer basic knowledge, such as how to update a driver, or how to select the correct driver for your PC.

I personally find it shocking that you would expect a line by line tutorial on how to interpret what you will find on website that someone graciously gives you.
