Thanks for your replies... The server is stand alone in the same workgroup with the other PCs. Anyway that seems to be a problem of windows 7 home since ultimate and professional edition connect properly to win 2000 share using the same user and password which that I am using with win7 home ed.   I guess that the windows 7 pc does not send the proper authentication info to the remote pc.

The solution: Registry editing for LAN manager authentication level (in Home edition this can be configured through registry)

How to do it:

1 . Open registry editor ( Start search - regedit)

2 . Browse to  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

3.  Create a new DWORD value  with the following properties:   NAME: LmCompatibilityLevel

                                                                                            VALUE: 1

  1. Restart your PC and try the connection again...

Adding this registry key did the job for me.  Using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Instead I changed my network in Network and Sharing Center from "Home network" to "Work network" and everything works for me now.  I wonder if this accomplishes the same thing as defining the DWORD LmCompatibilityLevel?

I was able to finally map a drive to a share on a Windows Server 2003 server.

The server and the Windows 7 64bit Home Premium PC are both in the same Workgroup, no domain.

You can map a drive using the following commands just substitute your information for

    "servername", "foldername" and "username"

    net use z: \servername\foldername /user:servername\username /persist ent:yes

The password or user name is invalid for \servername\foldername.

Enter the password for 'servername\foldername' to connect to 'servername':

    The command completed successfully.

you will be prompted to enter the password for the account after which you will have access to the drive.

"username" is the name of an account on the server.

if it complains that you already have these shares you can check by running the command

    net use: SEE EXAMPLE BELOW

C:\Users\FrankP>net use New connections will not be remembered.

    Status Local Remote Network

OK Z: \visionssvr\public Microsoft Windows Network

    OK \VISIONSSVR\pay-roll Microsoft Windows Network

    OK \VISIONSSVR\software Microsoft Windows Network

    The command completed successfully.

delete the unused connections by using the following commands

    C:\Users\FrankP>net use /delete \visionssvr\pay-roll

    \visionssvr\pay-roll was deleted successfully.

    C:\Users\FrankP>net use /delete \visionssvr\software

    \visionssvr\software was deleted successfully.

The registry trick worked for me after 2 years of frustration with Windows 7 network sharing. 3 Win7 PCs on home network, same workgroup, homegroup, settings, etc, 2 PCs had no problem with back and forth shared folders, one was stubbornly not allowing access to a share despite giving full control to so many users, groups, etc ('everyone' apparently does not mean everyone in windows 7). After reg hack, its working now.
