How can I lock desktop icons?

If your talking about the icons moving when you reboot or turn on your computer arrange your icons the way you want then click on an empty part of the desktop and choose refresh. This will lock the icons in place so everytime you reboot or start your computer they will be where you put them. Do the refresh everytime you add a program or anything to the desktop or rearrange your icons. Uncheck auto arrange and align to grid.

I'm talking about icons being scrambled on the desktop when a program such as Dragon Naturally Speaking loads its sidebar. In my example, most of my personal desktop icons are on the right side of my screen. When the DNS sidebar loads, it shoves the icons over to the left, and they are left in no sensible order.

Choosing "Refresh" does nothing to prevent the icons from moving, or make them move back upon reboot. Of course, why would I reboot after loading DNS? I would just have to load it again, and even if the icons were restored to their rightful place they would be moved again. This is Windows XP Pro.

The solution proposed by another user works for me -- when the icons get scrambled, I just right-click the recycle bin and select "Restore Desktop Icons". They move back where they belong, and stay there until the next time DNS is loaded. Once the icons move back into place, the DNS toolbar does not scramble them. That only happens when the program loads.

This was precisely the answer to prevent my icons from scrambling up! THANKS!

rigt click on the desktop in empty area go properties go desktop go customize desktop go web and check lock desktop option
