How can I lock desktop icons?

I am unable to LOCK the icon items on my desktop. I have clicked right on the desktop and via properties checked lock items, yet they are easily moved and NOT locked. I've tried locking them thru 'Appearances and Themes', yet they will NOT lock. How can I get them to stop moving around and stay put by locking. Any help would be graciously appreciated. And, no I am not changing my resolution which I know moves them.

I would like top reopen this thread if i can. i have a Windows XP desktop, with a widescreen monitor.  I like to keep some of the icons at the far right of the screen.  Periodically my daughter logs in as a 2nd user and when I switch users back to myself the far right icons have moved left as if to line up with a non-widescreen monitor.  I successfully added the suggested lines to the registry and rebooted, but it has made no difference - the icons still move.  Any suggestions?

    Hi,

I had the same problem locking the icons on my desktop in Windows 7. So I made a new 'fence' of the appropriate size, and put my icons into that and it seems to have solved the problem.

    Hope that helps.
