Hi there, have you tried this?Right click an empty space on your desktop, highlight desktop icons, place a check on 'lock icons in place' and uncheck'auto arrange,?
How can I lock desktop icons?
I am unable to LOCK the icon items on my desktop. I have clicked right on the desktop and via properties checked lock items, yet they are easily moved and NOT locked. I've tried locking them thru 'Appearances and Themes', yet they will NOT lock. How can I get them to stop moving around and stay put by locking. Any help would be graciously appreciated. And, no I am not changing my resolution which I know moves them.

2011-02-19T05:36:35+00:00 I did this a long time ago, and it still doesn't work 2 years later. A lot of the proposals were just too complicated for me to follow or I couldn't see choices that were mentioned. Ah well some of life's annoyances just must be endured. Thanks.

2011-01-17T23:36:15+00:00 Lock desktop items in place.... I do not see that in Win 7... ANYWHERE...
Are you guys sure that you are talking Win 7 with that "lock desktop.." stuff? Only previous versions have that...
All that I get is the option for Personalization and Change Desktop. Nothing about locking icons. I did find the item about allowing themes to change icons.

2010-12-31T13:02:56+00:00 Hi Mike,
I have exactly the problem you have described and have tried to follow your suggestion to remedy the problem. However, I am uncertain what you mean by name it anything with a .reg. I have used "icon.lock" It has created a notepad file on my desktop which opens to display your [HKEY_ CURRENT.....] and [Windows Reg......] but I am not sure if this is what you mean. Also I have tried to close everything and and then click on the file to "merge" but that option is not coming up either with a right click on the mouse or in any of the options on the toolbar of the opened file.
Please can you explain further in a language suitable for a technophob as I seam to be having a mental block when it comes to computer jargon.
Many Thanks
