The error code 80070005 usually means that you do not have enough permission to install updates.

First please confirm you have logged on an account with administrative privileges.

If the issue still occurs, lets’ try the following method to reset the permissions:

1. Download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads

  1. Go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.
  2. Select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.

**Note:**If the UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click Continue.

  1. Click Start, in the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:

@echo off

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

@Echo =========================

@Echo Finished.

@Echo =========================

@pause

  1. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the save location.
  2. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, and then choose "Run as administrator."
  3. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

**Note:**It may take several minutes. Please be patient. When it is completed, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

Try to install the updates again.

This issue can be also caused by third-party security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus software. You can disable or remove them to check the issue.

Let us know how is goes.

    I followed this procedure and now here I am writing you though my computer tells me I cannot connect to WiFi...and my audio won't work and I have four messages that are important but I cannot read because my systems tells me I do not have enough memory to do so. Okay...so now I am thinking that I perhaps have to reinstall Windows 7 completely....

    I am very frustrated. Running windows 7 64bit. Windows Updates says I need almost 40 important updates but  I got 3 of them to work.

    I have tried renaming the SoftwareConfiguration folder, trying the subinacl.exe/reset.bat solution, yes with correct paths for the folder where subinacl is installed, and now finally downloading the June 2011 ISO for updates, and attempting to install several of them, one by one, individually.

    All attempts failed, even the last one. I am at a loss, and really fed up with this Micro$oft routine. How could such an important computer function be such a problem for so many people, and across OS's? I have not been able to update since early 2011. My machine is at risk, and the company that makes my OS is no help. Individual computer owners should not have to go through such a ridiculous level of technological effort just to maintain their computers.

    Here are the updates I need:

    KB2508272 - Killbits

    KB2530548 - IE 8

    KB2446709 - .NET framework

    KB2544521 - IE 8

    KB2393802

    KB2425227

    KB2476490

    KB2479943

    KB2544893

    KB2387530

    KB2454826

    KB2467023

    KB2484033

    KB2487426

    KB2522422

    KB2524375

    KB2533552

    KB2534366

    KB2541014

    The results of running subinacl was over 90,000 files modified, but 44, 574 failed.

    I am at a loss. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
