i kept on trying to update my window vista home basic since December 2008 but facing the problem of error, i am tired with this error please help me out to get rid of it

The error code 80070005 usually means that you do not have enough permission to install updates.

First please confirm you have logged on an account with administrative privileges.

If the issue still occurs, lets’ try the following method to reset the permissions:

1. Download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

  1. Go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.
  2. Select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.

**Note:**If the UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click Continue.

  1. Click Start, in the Start Search bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the open Notepad window:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

@Echo =========================

@Echo Finished.

@Echo =========================

@pause

  1. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the save location.
  2. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, and then choose "Run as administrator."
  3. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

**Note:**It may take several minutes. Please be patient. When it is completed, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

Try to install the updates again.

This issue can be also caused by third-party security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus software. You can disable or remove them to check the issue.

    I am running WIN7 ULT and have tried all solutions except the right one.  I still cannot update all selections.  Some load.  Others do not.                                           My system does not like these:                                                                                    KB2902885;  KB2862330;  KB2837617;  KB8915597;  KB2913602;  KB2913431;

    Kazzaneedshelp, thank you thank you thank you. This fixed the problem. Someone needs to promote this solution to the top of the list. It's the only one that works, and it's much easier than all the other **** people randomly told me and countless others to do.

    I've trided this subinacl suggestion and it does not work. When I run the reset.bat file as Administrator, I see the message (in the MS DOS format) 'subinacl.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command.

    Nothing doing - and the problem seems unresolvable.

    This effing sucks to high heaven that Microsoft a) has a product that can not be updated, and b) can't deliver simple instructions on how to fix it.

    Thanks for handing me a big heaping pile of dogshit, Microsoft.

    I am running Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1 - last updated almost a year ago!!!! Because of this unresolvable effing problem.

    Been battling this same error for over 4 months now.  Tried all if the suggestions on this page plus many others, and the  SP1 upgrade tries, and refuses to run everyday.   I'm beginning to believe that there is no fix for this error!  Ran the fix here, plus the upgrade in safe mode as Administrator, (no firewall, no anti-virus) but still no luck.   Has anybody actually got rid of this error without wiping the whole machine and starting over?

    I found out the problem for me but it wasn't a solution.  My computer is six years old, a Dell XPS 720, and although it ran windows 8.0 without any problems apparently windows 8.1 has an improved security feature that requires computer manufacturers to build it into their BIOS.  Dell doesn't support this feature for my computer or windows 8 for that matter.  If I want to run 8.1 I need to buy a new computer.  This took microsoft's answer service two and a half hours to determine.  I'd hate to pay their phone bills!
