ERROR CODE 80072EFE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO UPDATE IN WINDOWS UPDATE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. McAFEE installed after win security ess. uninstalled. several problems w/  programs " not responding" constantly and pc running very slow.  compaq presario  SR5550F

    1. Download the file TDSSKiller.zip from the following link and save it on the Desktop.

    http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip

    1. Double click TDSSKiller.zip to unzip the file.
    2. Double click TDSSKiller.exe to scan the system.
    3. Wait for the scan and disinfection process to complete.
    4. Check for updates again.

    This worked for me for error code 80072efe.

    Q: How did your computer get infected in the first place?

    A: I have AVG professional installed...Any advice on what additional measures I should take?

    Yes, replace AVG ASAP.

    Recommendations include NOD32 & Kaspersky (not the suites) as well as Microsoft Security Essential (read my sig).

    How did your computer get infected in the first place? What other infections may still be plaguing the computer?

    Hi,

    I have no idea. I have AVG professional installed and regularly scan.

    Reading about Rootkits I understand those most vulnerable are people using P2P and no user of the PC does that.

    Since this infection I've done an AVG scan, Spybot search and destroy scan and an Adaware scan and while they did find stuff it was only cookies.

    Any advice on what additional measures I should take?
