ERROR CODE 80072EFE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO UPDATE IN WINDOWS UPDATE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. McAFEE installed after win security ess. uninstalled. several problems w/  programs " not responding" constantly and pc running very slow.  compaq presario  SR5550F

    Hi

    I have seen this error quite often.

    Error 80072EFE is related to Update server closing the connection.

    Mosty likely, the computer may be infected with ROOTKITS.

    Try to run TDSSKILLER to find any rootkits.

    Download and run from here

    http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

    Then try to update Windows

    0x80072EFE - ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED - The connection with the server has been terminated.

    But as you mention you have other problems, your computer may be infected with a virus/malware etc.

    No doubt PA Bear will read this and suggest some checking/cleaning advice.

    I ran TDSSKILLER, removed one rootkit, tried Windows Update and it finally ran after a month and a half.

    Did you make any changes on your computer prior to this issue?

    **A)**For the Windows update issue, let's follow these steps:

    **Method 1:**Make sure that the following services are started.

    1. Click Start, type services.msc, press enter and then click Services.
    2. Double-click on this service:

    ·          Windows Update service.

    ·          Cryptographic service.

    ·          Background intelligent transfer service.

    1. Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start the computer.

    **Method 2:**Let’s follow the steps given in this link:

    You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

    Then try to install the updates and check.

    B) Perform clean boot then run the programs and check if it’s working fine. Clean boot will start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and it helps eliminate software conflicts.

    1. Perform clean boot (Check the link for performing clean boot).
    2. Enable half of the services.
    3. Determine whether the problem returns.
    4. Enable half of the startup items.
    5. Determine whether the problem returns.

     6) Repeat the above steps until you find out which service or program is causing the issue
