Just go to the start screen, and then to Control Panel. In the search box for Control Panel, type Administrative Tools, or click it if you see it already. Scroll down to the Services shortcut and select that.

If you scroll down in the list of services to the 'T' area, you should see Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Service, or words to that effect. It is running, and on Automatic start type. Stop the service, then go into Properties and switch the startup type to Disabled.

    Hi there,

    Have found how to do it on my Surface Pro 4 because this was frankly doing my head in.

    Start > Settings > Devices > Typing

    Scroll down and turn OFF "Show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode and there is no keyboard attached". (This appears to refer to the touch cover keyboard)

    This seems to depend on turning off Tablet Mode in the expanded Notifications panel:

    Click Notifications, top right of the taskbar

    Expand the button list > Tap "Tablet Mode" until it is explicitly turned OFF.

    ==>The catch<==

    You'll need to explicitly turn the touch keyboard on with the taskbar button if you're using it as a tablet.

    ==>Captain Obvious time<==

    And for MS support: It would be really obvious to have a flag in the OS to automatically turn off the onscreen keyboard if a Bluetooth keyboard is connected.
