I have tried several times to install the disk that came with my Cannon EOS Digital Camera but Windows 7 does not recognize the drivers, Windows XP did with no issues. Cannon says their old driver is compatable with Windows 7. Can anyone help?

I've had the same problem since I went to Vista, but in checking on the boards, I found an undocumented trick!!!
Turn the camera on, and go to the menu.
On the 4th menu tab select the "Communications" entry and change it from NORMAL to PTP
Plug the camera back into the laptop, wait 30 seconds, and enjoy your camera again

Which version of Windows 7 are you using? is it 32bit or 64bit as the support paper from Canon only lists 32bit as supported amd/or not supporting the EOS utility and images only viewable via the memory card http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/Windows7_compatibility.pdf
If you just plug in the camera, does Windows load a basic storage driver? with this you can get to download your images from the camera to PC. You could also try with the XP driver to right click the setup and choose Run as Administrator, odd times it dos allow a driver to install.

I have a Canon Eos 50D which worked great with my laptop with Windows 7 home Premium 64bit. After 8 months (june 27th 2010)my camera will not connect to my latop. I get error code 31 in device manager. My thumb connects but has a error code 10 in device manager. MY Iphone will not connect. So something is going on with my usb ports and Windows 7. The only fix I found that works is to reload windows 7. This camera is listed on Windows 7 compatibility list. I have been there done that from installing drivers update bios chipset drivers. editreg, system restore etc etc etc. Nothing works except to reload Windows 7 which is a real pain. This is issue is not the Canon camera. I will reload Windows7 again and turn off windows updates. I believe it is a windows update creating the issue.
To those who are complaining that Windows 7 can not access the Canon cameras, other than using the PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol,) you should address this issue with Canon. Microsoft does not make the Canon cameras and does not maintain the EOS software. PTP protocol is the Microsoft standard transfer routine to permit the coping of pictures across a wide-range of cameras (different make / models.) Canon might have decided to make you camera model a "legacy" product. Legacy products no longer will be getting support, product updates, drivers and software to manage the camera.
This not a complete solution. EOS utility is also used for remote shooting and setting up camera parameters. PTP will only let you download pictures. And download is not a problem, as it's easier to use the card reader, as someone mentioned before.
