Still cant connect to certain sites did the interent options diagnostic and gave me a error code Error 12029. I googled error and a host of sites say I got registery errors that I have to pay to fix. Is this the problem and does microsoft offer some kind of registery fix program. I thought it might be the USB so I bought a wireless card, but I still have the same problem. I'm baffled!

 

The 'Registry error fixers' are almost totally snake-oil sellers - do NOT fall for their charms!

I had similar problems with a machine yesterday, funnily enough - and it turned out that the Router it was connected to was using static DNS, and one of the DNS servers was poisoned, and redirecting requests to certain sites to some very strange places! I suspect that a literal drive-by hacker changed the DNS targets, as the router was on default security settings.

Check your DNS settings - most of the time they should be set to automatically get DNS from the ISP - or at least set to get them from well-known public DNS Servers such as OpenDNS or Google. Also check your router to make sure that it hasn't been 'got at' in similar fashion.

I FIXED IT!! It was my old norton antivirus that never completely uninstalled. I didnt even see in in the add and remove items but I ran the uninstall program for norton and restarted my computer and it worked. Thank you for all the advice.

Norton has a LOT to answer for - and its built-in uninstaller even more! I assume that the uninstaller you ran was the SymNRT Norton Removal tool? - if not, then run that as well (it still leaves stuff behind - but mostly in the form of files scattered round the computer, rather than 'bad' entries in the registry.

Just for information purposes, I recently was staying in a hotel with wireless internet.  Unfortunately, the WiFi connection would not work so I contacted the hotel's tech support staff.  After 30 minutes trying all sorts of things the support staff person instructed me to change certain settings on my laptop that would be "compatible" with the access point."  He then proceeded to walk me through changing various settings on my laptop (including the DNS setting mentioned here).   What he actually had me do was to "undo" the instruction to "automatically" conform to the DNS setting of the network connection (other than that specific one at that hotel access point).  At the time I did not realize how this would cause problems later with other connections.  Later when I was back at home, and at other locations with WiFi, I found I was unable to get any connection to a browser (although I was "connected").  I had forgotten about the resetting of the DNS properties before, and not until I read this thread did I realize that was the problem.  When I went back to reset DNS to automatic I had no further problems.  Finally, after many hours of trying to figure this out I had a simple solution.  Word to the wise:  when contacting tech support at WiFi locations (such as hotels) be very wary of "solutions" that might be proposed for connection problems, especially if they involve changing settings on your laptop.  Thanks for the help given here.

I had not exact but similar issue which may help you here. But I took a different (more risky) way to solve by editing registry values. Before you work with registry, make registry backup with ERUNT and take a fresh snapshot of the System Setting (i.e. Create new System restore Point).

Go to Registry and Right-Click to save this hives: Network and TCPIP. (you can delete the DHCP address if you wish for theprivacy reasons.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network]

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip]

Please post the content of these two hives, alongwith your Firewall and AV/AS software name. There is a possibility that you have a problem\corruption with network configuration. My take is that your Network adapter setting is corrupted by the AV/AS while cleaning spyware/trojan.

Or, you can simply try resetting the network in the SAFE MODE:

I would recommend to use RegAlyzer program to find all hidden registries with these key words: Symantec, Norton, NAV, SAV. You will be surprised that so many keys are still not cleared.

Additionally, Symantec stores files in (i) Windows\System32\drivers (ii) Windows\System32 (iii) Program Files\Common Files.

These locations also need to be purged of Symantec residues. One way to achieve this is to run through Windows PE Loader, and use RegistryEditorPE like program.
