Network and Sharing Center shows not connected, but computer is connected to wireless network

benjamin, I might have a working copy of that file since I have 2 other computers running Windows 7 just fine. I'm out of the house until wednesday, and I can't check if replacing that file on the problem computer will help. Elotroalex, I feel like I could have written the same thing! I upgraded thinking it would be solved, but to no avail. After weeks and weeks of research on the internet, I think it is a problem with the nlasvc.dll file that's in the System 32 file becaue that file runs the Network Location Awareness service, which identifies to which network you're connected. I have yet to find a place to re-download or upgrade or fix this file. The strange thing is that with some locations, my internet will recognize that it's connected, but in other location it won't. I am sure this is not an issue with the networks, because my friends who have Vista and the exact same system as me (Dell XPS M1330) show that they are connected on the networks where mine shows it is not. I also would like to connect to my Homegroup because I want to be able to use my Xbox like I'm supposed to be able to - as a media center extension. That's part of the advantage, supposedly, of having microsoft products, but if they don't work, it doesn't even matter.  I guess that's a convenience issue, as my computer will actually function, except for the extras that I also want to use it for. Anyway, it would be really nice if there were a solution to this. I have considered completely re-installing Windows 7 instead of using the upgrade option, but I don't want to mess with all that trouble just to fix a problem that Microsoft should have a solution for. I hope someone finds a way to repair the nlasvc.dll file!

I have the same problem and so do tons of other people. Apparently this problem has been around since Vista. I recently updated to Windows 7 Ultimate. For me this problem is more than just an annoyance since I am not able to access my homegroup from this computer because it seems to be condemned to think it is in a public location. This was the reason I bought W7 for all my computers at home, so I feel a bit cheated. I have spent a whole day trying to find an answer on the internet, but despite this being an old problem there have not been any real solutions, at least none that are posted out there. I hope Microsoft is working to solve this problem. I have a LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E Adapter running from a VAIO VGN-NR220E and trying to connect to a Wireless-G WRT54G router. If anyone finds an answer to this problem, please email me. I will continue to check this forum entry since it is the most recent one dealing with this problem.

I have similar problem on Vista laptop. It will not take a DHCP assignment.   The router is working fine for my XP machines.

It has not had an update since May of 2009. All updates after that failed.
