HP Multi-function printers may not work as expected after upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Hello,

I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista and my HP multi-function printer doesn’t work. I can still print if I print from an application but when I try to use the buttons on the printer nothing happens. I also can’t check things like ink levels and I can’t scan. Is this a known issue? What can I do to fix this?

Hello Christi,

This is a known issue with the HP Solution Center and upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Basically the HP Solution Center doesn’t upgrade properly to Windows 7 because of some required libraries don’t get migrated during the upgrade. To resolve the issue, click Start, All Programs and click Windows Update, and then check for and install the update for KB 975891.

    I’ve run into several issues where hardware doesn’t work as expected after upgrading to a new OS. In almost all of those cases I’ve always fallen back to the basics to get the issue resolved. Start clean and uninstall the current driver, (if the printer software has an uninstall application you should use it) also, if prompted to delete the printer driver files it's best to do it, then, download the latest driver from the manufacturer for the current OS, and then install that driver. If you’re installing a USB printer you might need to unplug the USB cable before installing the driver, you should be prompted when to plug it in. If you still can’t print after the new driver is installed you might need to contact the manufacturer.

    I read somewhere (maybe here) that in Safe Mode, if you disable "Signature Drivers", it might help.  It DID!  My canon MP960 installed correctly in Win7 Ultimate 32 bit, and print spoolers are functioning.  It might pay to try it.  (At least until Canon comes out with a Signature Driver that works!)

    Nice to know that I'm not the only one who has discovered Windows 7 professional issues with (32 bit) HP psc 1200 series - it recognises the scanner function but not the print function.  Went to Windows update, downloaded the patch which failed to install x 3.  It's 12:30am, I'm going to bed, just as well I still have the PC running xp and usb memory sticks!

    Your post attracted my attention because I happened to have an HP 1210 sitting doing nothing on a desk behind me. I thought I'd try connecting it to my Win7 to see what happens.

    First off, I have Windows 7 32bit Home Premium, not Pro. This was an upgrade install of Win7 but since there were no drivers installed for the HP printer in the previous operating system, in effect it was a clean printer installation.

    Plugged in the printer USB cable, turned on the power. The MS drivers for it installed automatically, without issue, including one fairly large download from MS.

    Scanning tested Okay, printing tested Okay. The new printer utilities page looks quite good, actually.

    If you installed your Windows 7 as an upgrade I suspect that you already had HP drivers installed in the previous operating system. That would likely be the cause of the new printer drivers not installing properly now.  Try uninstalling both the munged printer drivers and any printer utility software from HP and then reconnect the PSC. The Windows 7 drivers do work. It's just a matter of cleaning up the old junk files so that the new driver can install properly. Any software you got from HP is also subject to either updating or deleting from the system. I note that ArcSoft is one of those companies not big on providing free updates to their OEM software to support new operating systems.
