HP Multi-function printers may not work as expected after upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista Home Premium this past weekend. I have attempted the upgrade several times since the first of the year. The upgrade completed once with a number of problems including being unable to use my Lexmark All-in-one printer. After contacting Microsoft to help correct the situation I did not receive a solution and became frustrated due to the fact that there still is no solution as I found out again.

My solution was to reconvert to Vista and had to re-install all my programs in the Vista OS. I am very disappointed that a solution is still not available. The printer is a very important peice of hardware to running a business and it's a shame that HP and other manufacturers have not provided the proper driver software. When I try to run the software by trying to print something or try to check ink levels, etc. a pop-up indicated that the software was moved or deleted after the installation.

I see that there are many inquiries regarding this issue and it makes me very upset that I can't use my printer now since I upgraded to Windows 7.

When I had the same issue with Lexmark 7675 I called Lexmark twice and Microsoft. All I was told was that there is a windows 7 upgrade download on the Lexmark site. However, it does not support the fax solutions software, to which I have become extremely dependent on. For 6 mos prior I did not have to print out a sheet to fax it, now I do. Which is a costly wasted of paper and ink. I kept declaring that the printer did NOT function for the purposes for which I purchased it so it is NOT compatible with windows 7. These people are trained to say one thing, the printer prints therefore it is compatible, without even acknowledging my inconvenience. I did my due diligence before installing 7, and all around said this printer was compatible. Now I cannot revert to Vista and I cannot fax from my desttop. I'm still ticked off at the lack of consideration from both Mircrosoft and Lexmark for not addressing much less acknowledging my inconvenience.  But anyway, do to Lexmark.com and do a driver search for your printer. It probably has a Win7 compatiblilty download, but you may not have all funtionality.

I struggled with this issue for several days, researching everything I could online.  I finally contacted HP support and I have the fix outlined on my blog . Here are the steps that got my printer working albeit with limited options.  Fortunately I can now print via USB cable.

1. Verify that the All-in-One is connected to the computer via USB cable.
2. Go to Start >>Devices & Printers
3. Click on Add a Printer icon. Click Next
4. If a message asks Local or Network, choose Local, then click Next
5. Choose USB001 as the port, then click Next
6. In the Manufacturers list choose HP
7. In the printer list, choose the HP Deskjet 990c printer, then click Next.  If you don’t find 990c, then select “Windows Update” in the same dialog box. It will re-populate the list.  (I had to re-populate the list and it took a 5-6 minutes)
8. The printer name should be listed as HP Deskjet 990C printer. Select Next.
9. If you receive an option to share the printer, select NO.
10. Click YES on Do you want your Windows based programs to use this printer as your default printer? Then click Next.
11. Click NO when it asks, Would you list to print a test page (recommended). Then click Finish.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista and my HP multi-function printer doesn’t work. I can still print if I print from an application but when I try to use the buttons on the printer nothing happens. I also can’t check things like ink levels and I can’t scan. Is this a known issue? What can I do to fix this?
