HP Multi-function printers may not work as expected after upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Hello,

I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista and my HP multi-function printer doesn’t work. I can still print if I print from an application but when I try to use the buttons on the printer nothing happens. I also can’t check things like ink levels and I can’t scan. Is this a known issue? What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

Christi

Hello Christi,

This is a known issue with the HP Solution Center and upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Basically the HP Solution Center doesn’t upgrade properly to Windows 7 because of some required libraries don’t get migrated during the upgrade. To resolve the issue, click Start, All Programs and click Windows Update, and then check for and install the update for KB 975891.

For more information on the issue, click the link below to view the KB article.

KB975891 HP Multifunction Printers and HP Full Feature Software or HP Basic Driver solutions do not work as expected after a computer upgrades from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Note: You can also download and install the appropriate HP device software for Windows 7 from http://www.HP.com

Thanks

Bobby

    Good evening.

I have uninstalled the HP AIO C6150 printer, then the  HP Solution Center software about 4+ times. Then a restart, I download from the HP site the HP Solution Center (with all its bits and pieces) with the driver and reinstall both the software and the printer. I have done this connecting the printer both via a wireless connection and then a USB connection. The same result in all cases:

    • I can "see" the printer on the HP software, it says "connected", I can see ink levels ( a bar graph). All seems normal.
    • I can print the "Printer Diagnostics" page.
    • I can't print a "test page" or from any application, Word, Tbird etc The application seems to go thru all the steps, I select which printer, then number of copies, I say OK....then the queue...then disappears and nothing happens.

I had read, on the HP site, about the patch.....HP Print Software Patch When Upgrading Vista to Windows 7

This was on the page when selecting my printer  C6150 and W7 (64). Sounds like it would apply to me!

I was thinking of a reload of W7. But....all I have is an "upgrade" disc (free from Dell as part of the PC purchase) and was unsure if this would work to reload W7

I am at a complete loss as to next steps......

Have you checked the system Event viewer for any printer related error messages that might be there? Something in your system is intercepting the printer input from the computer but so far there isn't anything in what you've written that gives a clue as to what it might be.

Regarding that patch, due to the wording you would think that this particular patch would only apply to printer installations that were already existent at the time the upgrade to Windows 7 was done. New printer installations that were done into Windows 7 should be exempt. It could be sloppy wording on Dell's part but they do specify "the original software".

Below are the things that patch fixes, actual printing isn't listed among them.

    HP Print Status --?

    Toolbox -- already working?

    Ink Levels -- already working

    Solution Center --already working?

    HP Scan (All-in-One) ?

Front panel scan button (All-in-One)--already working?

Besides, installing it hasn't helped yet so there's no reason to believe it will suddenly work if you just keep installing it often enough.

With a normal Windows upgrade disk you could do a clean install of Windows 7 rather than upgrade the existing OS, but Dell's upgrade disk could be something completely different. Windows wouldn't normally upgrade same version to same version though. Either way expect to have to reinstall the original Dell OS first before the upgrade will run again.

I checked for that update, but it doesn't come up as being available. I have downloaded every update HP has published since 10/2009 -- over 40 of them. Still trying to get the scanner on my HP LaserJet Pro L7590 AIO functioning.

How do I find that one if it doesn't show up in Windows Update file?

    Appreciate your help.
