HP Multi-function printers may not work as expected after upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Hello,

I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista and my HP multi-function printer doesn’t work. I can still print if I print from an application but when I try to use the buttons on the printer nothing happens. I also can’t check things like ink levels and I can’t scan. Is this a known issue? What can I do to fix this?

Hello Christi,

This is a known issue with the HP Solution Center and upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Basically the HP Solution Center doesn’t upgrade properly to Windows 7 because of some required libraries don’t get migrated during the upgrade. To resolve the issue, click Start, All Programs and click Windows Update, and then check for and install the update for KB 975891.

    If you didn't uninstall the HP printer drivers and software before you did the upgrade to Windows 7 that could be the cause of the problem now. Try doing a clean re-install of the printer drivers on the Dell. Uninstall the existing printer software and drivers, reboot and reinstall the drivers. That critical update doesn't seem to apply to your circumstances.. at least not until you successfully scan something and then cannot find it. Don't install unnecessary patches, you might break something that didn't need fixing. In any case leave out the patches until after you've tried the normal functions.

    My basic problem is: my  5 month old Dell laptop upgraded a few days ago  from Vista  to W7 Home Premium (64 bit). My All in One HP C6150 will not print. It will not print from any application, Word, TBird, test print etc. The only thing that will print is  a "Printer diagnostics page".

    I have downloaded the printer software and drivers from the HP site Feb 19. (HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers and     Critical Update: Cannot find scanned image or document files after scanning completes.       and HP Print Software Patch When Upgrading Vista to Windows 7

    I assume this means I have the latest driver and software for the HP AIO C6150, ...13.1.0

    My HP AIO C6150 is a wireless printer. My 2 laptops are connected wirelessly to the printer. My 3rd PC, a desktop running XP has and continues to be printing satisfactorily. I have not made any changes to my desktop operation.

    The Dell laptop can see the C6150, ink levels and says I am connected. When I print a test page the paper comes out of  the printer and I get about 1/64" of the copy on the first line...then no more copy. As noted earlier, Tbird, Word etc will not print.

    I have connected the HP AIO to my problem laptop via the USB connection....same results. no printing from any application, can't print a "test page" and will print a "Printer diagnostics page".

    I also purchased a new HP laptop for my wife a few days ago and it came with Windows Home 7 Home premium(64 bit) installed and downloaded the same HP software. This laptop (the HP) prints OK.

    I'm guessing, it seems to me  my Dell problem seems to be related somehow to the Vista to W7 upgrade on the Dell laptop (T6500 chip, 4GB of ram, etc )

    Any suggestions?....this is getting frustrating

    This is a real disgrace for Hp and Microsoft. My next computer, I am sure that it is not an Hp. The customer service's scandalous practices. Even over the phone.

    Having trouble navigating this page, but want to second Ralf G's answer of 2/22/2010.

    I had the same problem with Windows 7 upgrade from Vista. My HP PSC 750 all-in-one scanner worked but not the printer.

    I removed every reference to the printer from my computer and unplugged the printer USB cable from the computer. Then I downloaded the Driver Detector from HP.com. (don't know if that had anything to do with it, though)

    Plugged in the printer and the computer set it up automatically. I set up a printing job and noticed that Windows 7 had changed the printer choice in the print set up to a device I don't have. Changed it to the HP I have and printed without a hitch.

    I did all this after reading Ralf's suggestion. Hooray for our side!! Thanks Ralf!
