How to change monitor 1 for monitor 2

Why won't the just let me select the main monitor and have that stay put.  Seems like a simple thing to fix.  ****?

Now I have this problem, but did not have it before getting a new monitor.  Like most, I use the TV as an extended monitor and it stayed as monitor 2 and caused no trouble when I was using an older HP DVI input monitor.  The new HP monitor is wonderful, but only has VGA and HDMI and like others I only have one HDMI output from the computer. The HP monitor will not stay as monitor 1.  I uninstall the TV and get everything set with the HP as monitor 1 for the desk top.  When I plug in the HDMI TV, it automatically takes over the monitor 1 position.  That's fine until I turn off the TV.  The TV si going through a sound bar.  when I turn off the TV, the HDMI takes over  as main monitor and in can not use my computer. 

Very upsetting that this problem has been going on for so long and there is no solution in win 10.  Why won't the just let me select the main monitor and have that stay put.  Seems like a simple thing to fix.  ****?

Hmm. Thats really odd. I just tried it myself. Worked flawlessly. This must be something specific to docking stations. The OP mentioned a dock correct? And I saw others mentioning docks. I know it works on a regular desktop. I've done it on many different ones and various video cards. It's possible that it's something to do with how windows recognizes ports from the video card that is on board on the laptop versus how it sees the ports which are part of the docking station. Ultimately the graphics are derived off the on board video card from the laptop but I imagine there is something inconsistent with how the ports are recognized on the dock versus the laptop.

That is really strange. I've done this so many times with various versions of Windows and on multiple pieces of hardware over the years. But I cant remember if any specifically had a dock station involved.

I've tried this by using different HDMI and DVI ports.  Something with windows fully recognizes the driver of the monitor and doesn't allow it to switch the Monitor Identity Number.  So monitor 1 is always 1 and monitor 2 is always 2, regardless of which order and which plug i insert them into my video card. 

That's why this problem is so frustrating, and you would think would be seemingly easy to fix on microsoft's end(just allow us to change monitor numbers in software).

I cannot swap cables..You really thought we did not thought about that before struggling with all the possible solutions?...

Simply my graphic card has 1hdmi, 2DP and 1 DVI.. TV can only use hdmi.. And 1 monitor has only DP and the other one only DVI. So there is only way for me and many others to connect such a setup of monitors with TV..

I really hopped this will get fixed in win10.. Frustration even higher when I upgraded to 10 just because of that and not fixed even there.. Exactly same situation.
