Vista SP2 Update Fails - "No such interface supported" Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)"

SP2 loves updated drivers so I would do this.

1st RUN DISK CLEANUP = Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

Device Manager - look at maker - model - driver dates and versions of :

NIC - Wifi - Display Adapter - Sound - Mouse - Keyboard - Camera and all other specific devices found.

DO NOT RUN UPDATE MY DRIVERS IN DEVICE MANAGER as it only finds old certified ones and MS is way behind.

Also system makers do not often update their drivers once a model is not longer being sold.

So 1st go to Gateway and look for ALL updated drivers and BIOS.

After downloading DISABLE ALL Antivirus and Antispyware before each installation!

Download - SAVE - find RIGHT CLICK ON - RUN AS ADMIN - reboot after each even if not required to do so.

Look for specific instructions, some drivers have to be run more than once as they rollback so compare dates

and versions.

Now that is your fall back.

Now go to each individual maker's site and look for their latest drivers. Again do NOT run any scanners they offer

as these too will usually only find the same old drivers Device Manager does.

Install as above - look for special instructions.

NOW THE NEXT STEP CAN BE A LITTLE HAIRY. DO NOT STOP ONE OF THESE IN PROGRESS!!!!!

If your system has Intel Chipset do the following, if AMD go their and look for similar.

Do you know which chipset you have? If so skip to SECTION II

Also if you have 64 bit Vista Skip to SECTIUON II

Download - SAVE - right click on RUN AS ADMIN.

Section II

YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE BEFORE INSTALLING LOW LEVEL DRIVERS.

Chipsets - type chipset you have (Desktop - Laptop) - Download one for your chipset and version of Vista.

Download - SAVE - right click on RUN AS ADMIN.

Section III

Chipsets - Chipset Software - Chipset Software Installation Utility

Download - SAVE - right click on RUN AS ADMIN.

This normally does not affect a Service Pack however it could so do it too :

AFTER you have done all this try the SP2 install again. (Again disable your antivirus, antispyware, and right click

and RUN AS ADMIN on SP2.)

The Windows Installer CleanUp utility deletes all files and registry settings associated with a program's Windows Installer configuration.

SpiritX, I ran through those items again just for kicks and no joy.

Here's hoping Microsoft will let us get replacement OEM discs when needed, seeing as most mfg's won't provide them.

Like CCS, I tried many very specific steps.  Your first link was redundant to tests/procedures that I'd already stepped through.  HOWEVER. the second one I'd not seen before.  Its long and convoluted and it failed - which is a good thing!  After the fail, it led me down a path of diagnosis about DLL's that were out of sync.  My mshtml.dll was not registered or in place.  I could not solve it easily given how hard it is to find a specific version of a dll.   In the end, I spoke to the client about the machine and I reloaded the box from factory. 

*couple hints here - For those trying to diagnose this problem, I'm convinced my particular failure was a result of the date/time being incorrect for a few months.  The client had a motherboard replaced, the time/date were not reset (and the internet time never updated, pls don't offer help on that) and this in turn caused old updates to get reloaded over existing newer versions.  I believe this is how the DLL got broke in the first place. *

I will also add that once I factory reloaded, I used the two downloads from MS - 5 language SP1 and SP2 and was able to get Vista SP2 onto this box finally.  There were just too many problems and potential pitfalls down the road with a questionable box and I didn't feel the box would be 'right' even had I fixed the dll problem.

Just a comment here, but I think I realized yesterday why I hate vista soo much.  Its the needless complexity that kills me.  There are soo many prompts (yes I know all the dialog about this) but you really no longer ever know WHAT files are safe, which are correct and where they originated from as we used to 'back in the day'.  The DLL I was missing, there are about 100 possible sources and even had I gotten a copy from a safe source, who is to say it is compatible with the state of the machine anymore?  Its not the insane prompts, its the doubt the prompts cast.  Win95b was so easy.  You could rip a directory from one machine, overlay it onto a broken machine and fix a problem.   And if after 30+ years of doing desktop support I can't fathom it, what are ma and pa kettle supposed to think?  Go google.  pls pls pls give us an OS thats not more complicated than my Trig classes...
