Good morning.

Stand alone Vista SP2 Fails.

Using Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.exe file version 6.0.6002.18005  downloaded 5/26/09 2:03pm Central

"Installation was not successful"   "No such interface supported"   Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)"

I follow the Go online to learn more... link.

Resolution 1: Install the stand-alone package...  -  I am using the Standalone Package

Resolution 2: Run the System Update Readiness Tool - I did. No change, install still fails.

Resolution 3: Close or disable any applications...  - I did. No change, install still fails.

Resolution 4: Uninstall any security applications...   I did. No change, install still fails.

I have also run a check disk and run the SFC command to scan for corruption.  No change, install still fails.

This particular PC is a Gateway with pre-installed Vista Ultimate.  I installed SP1 via Windows Update a ways back.  It currently has all critical Windows Updates installed, exception of todays Windows Defender updates.

I have NOT installed: IE8, Windows Power Shell 1.0, Office Live Add-in, Windows DreamScene Pack #3, Windows Sound Schemes, Windows Live Essentials nor any of the 34 Language Packs

The PC has been scanned by multiple commercial grade malware programs, with the PC active and with the drive attaches to another machine. It is clean.

The PC is connected to a USB keyboard and wireless Logitech Mouse via a DVI/USB KVM device. (There is no Logitech software installed)

There are no other external devices attched to the PC. The printer is via wireless network.

UAC is turned off.

The hard drive has the main partition "Drive C" and the recovery partition "Drive H"

The DVD/RW is "Drive I"

The Card Reader in the PC has Drives D thru G

The Card Reader on the wireless HP C6180 shows as a network drive Z

Please send help.

I realize many of you may have given up and just reinstalled Vista or moved on to W7 at this point.

I was having the same issues as Coherent Computer Solutions.  I had narrowed the issue(s) down similarly and had gotten to the point where it seemed likely to me that the WMI issues were somehow related to the inability to install SP2.  I too was getting "Can’t Collect Information.  Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing."  Attempting to install Vista SP2 consistently wound up with "No such interface supported" Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)"  I had tried all the other suggestions found throughout this thread, especially in the sixth post.

I had already run the command "net localgroup Administrators LocalService /add" to resolve some problems with network connectivity.  I was receiving the message "Connection status: unknown.  Server execution failed"  when attempting to launch the Network and Sharing Center.  The "net localgroup Adminsitrators....." command fixed this beautifully.

But I was still getting the WMI error(s) and, as mentioned, also attributed the inability to install SP2 (No such interface supported) as being probably related to this. More digging and wmidiag showing similar errors reinforced this belief.  Finally, a bit more searching turned up this command:

net localgroup administrators NetworkService /ADD

Make sure to run it from an elevated command prompt (right-click and run as Administrator).  But, after running this command, msinfo32 worked perfectly and, lo and behold, Vista SP2 installed cleanly (and rather quickly, actually).  I hope this helps someone else out there and thanks to Coherent Computer Solutions for the msinfo32 WMI lead.  Happy holidays to all.

    Ran WU reinstall again:

"Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed"

    I re-registered the Windows Update dll's again.

    Clean Boot Mode:  Install failed.

Did Msinfo32:  Response -  Can’t Collect Information     Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing.

I stopped Windows Management Instrumentation service, renamed Repository, restarted service and Repository was recreated.   MSINOF32 still does not function.

Did:  winmgmt  /salvagerepository   Response - WMI repository is consistant

I re-registered the dll's and exe's in the Wbem folder using the following:

    cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem

    for %i in (*.dll) do RegSvr32 -s %i

    for %i in (*.exe) do %i /RegServer

    Still same issue.

    Tried:

    CD %windir%\system32\wbem

    Mofcomp.exe cimwin32.mof

    Regsvr32 /s wbemupgd.dll

    Regsvr32 /s wbemsvc.dll

    wmiprvse /regserver

I ran WMIDiag ver 2   I can e-mail Logs to any MS support people that wants to see them.

It seems to me that I did a couple other things but failed to note them and thus forgot what they were.

It seems like getting Windows Management Instrumentation functioning properly may be the key to the issue.

I do not have a Vista Ultimate disc handy to do anything requiring the disc. Gatway provides only a restore partition.

I do have other Vista discs in my pile, if I can do something using them to repair this issue with MSINFO32

FYI - Using the same installer file, I installed SP2 on a clients Dell Laptop with a clean install of Vista Prem 32bit using the Vista disc Dell provides. (Only SP1 and drivers were installed.)

I'll be forwarding this info along with screenshots and log files to the support rep who's reply to my e-mail was posted above.

Thanks for the suggestions.  They have been tried previously with no success.

Following is the reply I got from MS Support.  I have blanked out the support number and his e-mail address.

It seems to mirror Error_Counters reply.

    Dear David,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. My name is Leonard Zhou, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRX1xxxxxxx46. You can contact me by sending an email to *** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the case ID in the subject line.

From the problem description, I understand that Vista Service Pack 2 failed to install with error message "Installation was not successful" "No such interface supported" Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)", although you have tried to install its standalone installer package, run System Readiness Tool, disable any applications, uninstall any security applications, check disk, run SFC, register the Windows Update DLL's files, install in safe mode, install all critical updates, involving SP1. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

Before going on, I would like to confirm what you have noticed after running SFC. Have you seen some indicated there are some corrupted system files? I would apprecaite if you can help me confirm it.

The issue may occur if one of the following factors is true:

    1. Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.
    2. Some DLL files are corrupted, and failed to be fixed after the first attempt.

At this point, I suggest we can try the following steps.

Suggestion 1: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0

    =====================================

    1. Download the file from the following link:

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.2.6001.784/windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe

    1. Save the file to "D:".
    2. Click "Start" ->" Run", type: "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press "Enter" to install the Windows Update engine.

NOTE: There is a space between "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce".

Suggestion 2: Register DLL files again

    =======================

    1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
    2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. Please enter the following command, and press enter.

    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

You will get a "DllRegisterServer in wuaueng.dll succeeded" window.

    1. Then, please move on to enter the following commands one by one. A success notification will be received after each command.

    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL

    REGSVR32 ATL.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

    REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL

If Windows Vista SP2 still cannot be installed, I suggest downloading the Standalone Installer and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. If you still keep its standalone installer well, please skip the step 3 and do the step 4 directly.

Step 3: Download Windows Vista SP2 Standalone Installer

    ====================================================

    1. Download Windows Vista SP2 Standalone Installer from the link below according to the System Type:

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Five Language Standalone for Windows Vista 32-bit (KB948465) (Size: 348.3 MB)

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&DisplayLang=en

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Five Language Standalone for Windows Vista 64-bit (KB948465) (Size: 577.4 MB)

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&DisplayLang=en

If you have a dial-up connection, I believe it will be inconvenient to download the Standalone Installer due to its large size. If you have a US or Canada address, we can order a SP2 CD for you free of charge. In order to deliver the CD to you as soon as possible, I need to verify your current shipping address.

Name to ship to (if not you):

    Street address:

    City:

    State:

    Zip Code:

Phone (for the shipping company to use, should they need to contact you):

If you don't have a US or Canada address, please contact the local support from the following link to order the SP2 CD. Thanks for your understanding.

    http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

Step 4: Install Windows Vista SP2 in Clean Boot Mode

    =========================================

Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Windows Vista SP2.

    1. Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.

    1. Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    2. Click "Startup", click "Disable All", click "OK" and restart the computer.

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.

    1. Please double click the downloaded Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP2.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.

If the issue persists, please collect a screenshot of the error message, the latest System Information and CheckSUR log for further research. Please be sure that the information does not contain any of your confidential and private information. It's for troubleshooting purposes only. Thank you for understanding.

    How to capture a Screenshot

    ======================

    1. When the error appears, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on the keyboard.
    2. Click "Start", point to "All Programs", point to "Accessories" and then click "Paint".
    3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: screenshot.

Note: Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box. Save the screenshot file to the Desktop.
