Good morning.

Stand alone Vista SP2 Fails.

Using Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.exe file version 6.0.6002.18005  downloaded 5/26/09 2:03pm Central

"Installation was not successful"   "No such interface supported"   Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)"

I follow the Go online to learn more... link.

Resolution 1: Install the stand-alone package...  -  I am using the Standalone Package

Resolution 2: Run the System Update Readiness Tool - I did. No change, install still fails.

Resolution 3: Close or disable any applications...  - I did. No change, install still fails.

Resolution 4: Uninstall any security applications...   I did. No change, install still fails.

I have also run a check disk and run the SFC command to scan for corruption.  No change, install still fails.

This particular PC is a Gateway with pre-installed Vista Ultimate.  I installed SP1 via Windows Update a ways back.  It currently has all critical Windows Updates installed, exception of todays Windows Defender updates.

I have NOT installed: IE8, Windows Power Shell 1.0, Office Live Add-in, Windows DreamScene Pack #3, Windows Sound Schemes, Windows Live Essentials nor any of the 34 Language Packs

The PC has been scanned by multiple commercial grade malware programs, with the PC active and with the drive attaches to another machine. It is clean.

The PC is connected to a USB keyboard and wireless Logitech Mouse via a DVI/USB KVM device. (There is no Logitech software installed)

There are no other external devices attched to the PC. The printer is via wireless network.

UAC is turned off.

The hard drive has the main partition "Drive C" and the recovery partition "Drive H"

The DVD/RW is "Drive I"

The Card Reader in the PC has Drives D thru G

The Card Reader on the wireless HP C6180 shows as a network drive Z

Please send help.

I realize many of you may have given up and just reinstalled Vista or moved on to W7 at this point.

I was having the same issues as Coherent Computer Solutions.  I had narrowed the issue(s) down similarly and had gotten to the point where it seemed likely to me that the WMI issues were somehow related to the inability to install SP2.  I too was getting "Can’t Collect Information.  Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing."  Attempting to install Vista SP2 consistently wound up with "No such interface supported" Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)"  I had tried all the other suggestions found throughout this thread, especially in the sixth post.

I had already run the command "net localgroup Administrators LocalService /add" to resolve some problems with network connectivity.  I was receiving the message "Connection status: unknown.  Server execution failed"  when attempting to launch the Network and Sharing Center.  The "net localgroup Adminsitrators....." command fixed this beautifully.

But I was still getting the WMI error(s) and, as mentioned, also attributed the inability to install SP2 (No such interface supported) as being probably related to this. More digging and wmidiag showing similar errors reinforced this belief.  Finally, a bit more searching turned up this command:

net localgroup administrators NetworkService /ADD

Make sure to run it from an elevated command prompt (right-click and run as Administrator).  But, after running this command, msinfo32 worked perfectly and, lo and behold, Vista SP2 installed cleanly (and rather quickly, actually).  I hope this helps someone else out there and thanks to Coherent Computer Solutions for the msinfo32 WMI lead.  Happy holidays to all.

    Any other suggestions?

I'd rather not buy a copy of Vista Ultimate OEM from one of my vendors just to do a repair re-install.

    Happy Flag Day.

Sorry for delay. Been a crazy week.

Your list did not resolve the issue.

E-mail support sent me a disc to attempt a repair re-install. However it was a retail disc and does me no good.

Gateway tells me to contact Microsoft for an OEM disc and Microsoft tells me to contact Gateway.

Why can't Microsoft just send an OEM disc?  I'm not asking for another keycode.   I really don't want to resort to using a torrent download.

    Please send help.

    I appreciate the reply.

I give your list a go in order again.  Having done everything on the list I don't expect it will work.

I'll likely just leave this machine of to the side for any Vista support needs and replace it with a Windows 7 RC machine.  My Windows 7 RC machine is more stable and runs faster despite being older hardware.

    Looking forward to late October.

    Hi Coherent Computer Solutions,

Thanks for posting to answers.microsoft.com community forum.

Realize that you have submitted answers to many forum users from our discussion threads and wanted to say thank you for that.

Since, I've just reviewed the information in this post, I wanted to ask the following questions.

Sometimes, computers come pre-installed with 30 day trial software to various programs.  Sometimes one of those programs are Anti-Virus related.  I've seen these programs just being installed on systems cause issues very much like experienced here.  What I would suggest if this is the case is to use the REMOVAL TOOL of the manufacturer for that virus software - whether you've ever used it, or whether it has never been activated on your system - then try the install again.

This is because of past experiences after trying many, many, many, steps a resolution was achieved after doing that step.

Here are the summary of steps that I would take, and some you have already done, but, if you would accomplish these steps in this order and let us know the outcome, we really appreciate it.

(Again, thanks for posting to our forum group as an initiator of questions and in many cases responding to other community users on their questions.  )

    1. For any Anti-Virus Software, installed or just pre-loaded by the manufacturer.  Ran the Manufacturer of the Softwares removal tool to uninstall all instances.  NOTE:  You need to verify you have the media key and media to reinstall such items if desired.  ----I am not recommending never running Anti-Virus software as this is not a safe solution, just temporarily as we troubleshoot this issue.
    2. Next, let's rename the Software Distribution folder;
    • How to rename the Software Distribution folder in Windows Vista:
    1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator).

Go to Start button > Control Panel >System and Maintenance >Administrative Tools.

Double-click on Services. You will need to provide the Administrator password or confirmation if you are prompted to do so. Right-click the Windows Update service and click, Stop.

    1. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (Note: %windir% is the Windows directory where Windows Vista is installed). This will bring up a window of the Windows directory so you can locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. Rename it to SoftwareDistributionOld.
    2. Start the Windows Update service.

Go to Start button > Control Panel >System and Maintenance >Administrative Tools.

Double-click on Services. You will need to provide the Administrator password or confirmation

if you are prompted to do so. Right-click the Windows Update service and click, Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update service. It is okay to erase the history.

    1. You will need to reboot your system. Without rebooting, the new folder for Software Distribution cannot be successfully created.
    2. Run CheckSur -

    <ol><br><li> <ol><br><li><span>Click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Start</span><span>, click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Control Panel</span><span>, click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">System and Maintenance</span><span>, click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Administrative Tools</span><span>, and then double-click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">System Configuration</span><span>.</span><br></li><li><span>Click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Continue</span><span>, or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.</span><br></li><li><span>Click the<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">General</span><span> tab, and click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Selective startup</span><span>.</span><br></li><li><span>Under<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Selective startup</span><span> uncheck<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Load startup items</span><span>.</span><br></li><li><span>Click the<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Services</span><span> tab, check the<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Hide all Microsoft services</span><span> box, and then click<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Disable all</span><span>.</span><br></li><li><span>Click the<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Apply</span><span>, then<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">OK</span><span>, and then<br></span><span style="font-weight:bold">Restart</span><span>.</span><br></li></ol><br></li></ol>
    1. Remember after done troubleshooting this to bring your system back to Normal State by following the steps outlined in step 4, however, instead of select Selective Startup, select the Normal tab and return the system to normal.
    2. Try to install the update again.

Coherent Computer Solutions, we note that you were working with a Microsoft Support Phone Technician involving this, have you considered asking for a disk to do the SP2 install from.  Sometimes the download of the files may be getting corrupted and it may also be causing complications in the issue.  If have not already, please do not hesitate in inquiring to do so.

Also, you may want to move forward with an In-Place Upgrade to check if ability to install SP2 would be accomplished.

Your hardware Vendor may be able to provide the Vista Disk for you, or possibly a friend would have a Vista disk that would assist you in accomplishing the In-Place Upgrade.
