Thanks for the suggestions. They have been tried previously with no success.
Following is the reply I got from MS Support. I have blanked out the support number and his e-mail address.
It seems to mirror Error_Counters reply.
Dear David,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. My name is Leonard Zhou, and I am glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRX1xxxxxxx46. You can contact me by sending an email to
*** Email address is removed for privacy *** with the case ID in the subject line.
From the problem description, I understand that Vista Service Pack 2 failed to install with error message "Installation was not successful" "No such interface supported" Details - "Error: E_NOINTERFACE(0x80004002)", although you have tried to install its standalone
installer package, run System Readiness Tool, disable any applications, uninstall any security applications, check disk, run SFC, register the Windows Update DLL's files, install in safe mode, install all critical updates, involving SP1. If there has been
any misunderstanding, please let me know.
I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.
Before going on, I would like to confirm what you have noticed after running SFC. Have you seen some indicated there are some corrupted system files? I would apprecaite if you can help me confirm it.
The issue may occur if one of the following factors is true:
- Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.
- Some DLL files are corrupted, and failed to be fixed after the first attempt.
At this point, I suggest we can try the following steps.
Suggestion 1: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
=====================================
- Download the file from the following link:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.2.6001.784/windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe
- Save the file to "D:".
- Click "Start" ->" Run", type: "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press "Enter" to install the Windows Update engine.
NOTE: There is a space between "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce".
Suggestion 2: Register DLL files again
=======================
- Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
- Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
- Please enter the following command, and press enter.
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
You will get a "DllRegisterServer in wuaueng.dll succeeded" window.
- Then, please move on to enter the following commands one by one. A success notification will be received after each command.
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL
If Windows Vista SP2 still cannot be installed, I suggest downloading the Standalone Installer and installing it in Clean Boot Mode. If you still keep its standalone installer well, please skip the step 3 and do the step 4 directly.
Step 3: Download Windows Vista SP2 Standalone Installer
====================================================
- Download Windows Vista SP2 Standalone Installer from the link below according to the System Type:
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Five Language Standalone for Windows Vista 32-bit (KB948465) (Size: 348.3 MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a4dd31d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&DisplayLang=en
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Five Language Standalone for Windows Vista 64-bit (KB948465) (Size: 577.4 MB)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=656c9d4a-55ec-4972-a0d7-b1a6fedf51a7&DisplayLang=en
If you have a dial-up connection, I believe it will be inconvenient to download the Standalone Installer due to its large size. If you have a US or Canada address, we can order a SP2 CD for you free of charge. In order to deliver the CD to you as soon as possible,
I need to verify your current shipping address.
Name to ship to (if not you):
Street address:
City:
State:
Zip Code:
Phone (for the shipping company to use, should they need to contact you):
If you don't have a US or Canada address, please contact the local support from the following link to order the SP2 CD. Thanks for your understanding.

Step 4: Install Windows Vista SP2 in Clean Boot Mode
=========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Windows Vista SP2.
- Click "Start", type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.
Note: Please click "Continue" if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
- Click "Services", check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
- Click "Startup", click "Disable All", click "OK" and restart the computer.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.
- Please double click the downloaded Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP2.
To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.
If the issue persists, please collect a screenshot of the error message, the latest System Information and CheckSUR log for further research. Please be sure that the information does not contain any of your confidential and private information. It's for troubleshooting
purposes only. Thank you for understanding.
