Can not Change drive letter Windows 7

The error message "disk Management console view not up to date" comes up everytime I try to change the drive letter for an external USB hard drive. I tried diskpart but it only lists drives with letters.

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

If you don't like the letter Windows has assigned to a new drive or you want to organize your drive letters in a certain way, you can change the drive letter.You can assign the letters C through Z to each drive on your computer. A and B are usually reserved for floppy disk drives, but if your computer does not have floppy disk drives, you can assign A and B to volumes. You can see which drive letters are used on your computer by opening Computer.

You can change, add, or remove a drive letter by using Computer Management.


			<br>1. <br>Open Computer Management by clicking the<br>Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking<br>Computer Management. Once you have done this, look in Computer, now simply right click to create a shortcut from there and it will put it on the desktop!

I'm having similar trouble with a 4gb flash drive on W7 x64 Ultimate. I'm rebuilding the main drives on my desktop, and have only installed W7 x64 on the first partition. I have some 3<sup>rd</sup> party utilities, and my protection software loading from a separate partition, and my data is on yet another. Before restarting this build, all was working OK, booting to W7 x64, W7 x32, and W-XP x64. I decided to rebuild because I had made a mistake on my original partition scheme, and decided rebuilding would be easier than moving and resizing partitions.

The flash drive works fine in my laptop running W7 x32, but when I connected it to the desktop on the main drives, it doesn't show up in Explorer. In Disk Manager, the drive shows up without a drive letter. The first info field is correct ie: Disk 2, Removable, 3.77GB, and Online, but in the partition field it only gives the size. Left clicking the drive displays the options to: Change Drive Letter..., Format, Add Mirror, Properties, or Help. Clicking the first two, or Properties, results in the “The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view not up-to-date” error message. Add mirror might let me add a mirror to disk 0, but I didn't go that far into it, because I'm not sure what it will do to my main disk. Help is of no help in this case. I have several other USB drives here, including another flash, and they all work fine on each of my USB ports. Additionally, I booted onto another bare bones copy of W7 x32 that I have on a separate disk of the same desktop, and the flash drive is working normal from there.

I removed the info from the flash drive and formatted it in using my laptop, but that didn't make a difference.

Go to what site? You didn't say where. Doesent anyone at Microsoft know how to fix this problem? I can't beleive they are that lame!

hello all! so after hours of obsessing i think i found the answer! this will erase the drive but make keep it from becoming an expensive keyring.

go to this site and follow the first 4 steps and stop on 5. this should get it workn for you all.
