Hi, my computer has stopped automatic windows update. I'm using vista 32bit home premium. It seems that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (bits) has been disabled. I tried to turn it on but the problem is IT IS NOT IN THE SERVICES LIST... so i cannot set it to automatic or manual or whatever. All supports info says is to go to services and and set BITS to automatic... but how can i do it if its not in the list ???!!!
Everytime I run windows update it says "errors found code 80246008"
Somebody pleeease help. I'm at my wits end what to do.

I spent far too long trying to fix this. BITS needs to be re-registered first before you can even start trying any of the other solutions on here: sc create BITS binpath= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" start= delayed-auto Then either restart, or go into Services (run: services.msc) and restart it yourself.

Corrupt, damaged, or otherwise missing service…
If the BITS service was recently deleted, meaning if you only recently started receiving this error code, you can use **System Restore** to rollback the system to before this issue first began – in turn restoring the missing service.
Please note that this one missing service you’ve identified may only be a symptom of a larger problem. I’d recommend that you run the **System File Checker** (SFC) on your system. It will not replace the missing service, but will scan for and attempt to repair other corruption that may be present.
If you were able to successfully restore the service using System Restore you will need to Check for updates to see if the issue has been resolved. If after you’ve restored the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) you continue to receive errors pertaining to this service I recommend that you run the BITS Repair Tool for Windows Vista (KB940520). However, please note that it will NOT run on a system that is missing the BITS service - so again this can only be run after you’re restored the service.

I have followed the command line and BITS shows up in the list of Services.
When I try to start the service I get the following:
"Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on the Local Computer"
"Error 2 : The system cannot find the file specified"
I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit
I have no other healthy pc with similar OS that I can copy former Registry Keys from.
I tried http://www.speedyvista.com/regGen.php
and http://www.blackviper.com/2007/10/15/windows-vista-services-registry-files/
to get default BITS registry, but there is only 1 key in the .reg file to edit, while the Windows 7
people have posted a much longer RegEdit key. here:

Windows update is running fine, but BITS is still not working. Anyhow with healthy BITS running on Vista Home Premium can do an export and post?
OK I finally got it working.
This is for Vista Home Premium 32-bit
First thing I did was run the FarBar Service Scanner Software,

There was also some other services which apparently got compromised in a recent virus attack which I believe was instigated by an apparent Video Codec update pack I installed "Mega Codec Pack 9.6.exe" BEWARE!! It has also taken out Windows Security Center. BAD BAD BAD. Scans by many antivirus software including malwarebytes picked up nothing, did rootkit scans with kasperov and others.
by the way multiple attempts at FixItCenter specifically for windows update in aggressive mode couldn't fix the problem.
Anyway, seeing the 'ServiceDll' I copied a section from the Windows 7 reg already posted in this thread. I added this to the default BITS reg I got from blackviper and speedyvista

made sure I opened regedit in admin role and did File-<Import
rather than just double-clicking on .reg file.

I tried again, Windows Update used to have 4 items waiting, but when I opened it there were none...Maybe worse. I tried to update - New Error Code 8024402f while before it was 80246008
which was the search that lead me to this page and other initially.
So new search on 8024402f brought:

which just gave me a .digicab file which I tried to open in some microsoft toolkit but it wanted a pass key and I had to get this from the vendor or them. Very unspecific and unhelpful. googled, nada. Perhaps you have to pay to use this. Give me a break, I would buy a new computer before I would pay to fix this.

Also tried 2nd reply here, switching the DNS of my LAN to Google, perhaps virus or rootkit had cut the connection to MS, so route thru other proxy.
Not sure only a bit of a pc fix it guy, like doing website stuff more.
always a balance when searching for fixes, because you can try some many things that other suggest and this can make things worse unless you record your steps.

Finally I found the Microsoft update site. I was looking for this before, but it was forwarding me to the ThankYou.aspx page. Well this is the Downloads page. So while I reset the DNS I also downloaded the latest 'Culmulative Download for Vista' and ran that from the .exe.

this may have made a new 'last update' key somewhere, not sure.
At least I thought it might contain updated definitions to some this virus posing as a video codec.

Working...Now Security Center but hopefully some of these updates will patch this nasty.
In summary the command line creation of BITS will wipe the Reg files which probably has when you last downloaded and whether you are auto and other stuff. Some of this is in Windows Update service which was still working for me, although this was initially out when virus first struck, MS Fixit was able to get that service backup, but there is some sync between BITS and windows update so toggling the radio buttons can help reset the registry values. I would imagine anyhow.
Hopefully not too confusing but this is for VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32-bit.
