Hi, my computer has stopped automatic windows update. I'm using vista 32bit home premium. It seems that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (bits) has been disabled. I tried to turn it on but the problem is IT IS NOT IN THE SERVICES LIST... so i cannot set it to automatic or manual or whatever. All supports info says is to go to services and and set BITS to automatic... but how can i do it if its not in the list ???!!!
Everytime I run windows update it says "errors found code 80246008"
Somebody pleeease help. I'm at my wits end what to do.

I spent far too long trying to fix this. BITS needs to be re-registered first before you can even start trying any of the other solutions on here: sc create BITS binpath= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" start= delayed-auto Then either restart, or go into Services (run: services.msc) and restart it yourself.

Corrupt, damaged, or otherwise missing service…
If the BITS service was recently deleted, meaning if you only recently started receiving this error code, you can use **System Restore** to rollback the system to before this issue first began – in turn restoring the missing service.
Please note that this one missing service you’ve identified may only be a symptom of a larger problem. I’d recommend that you run the **System File Checker** (SFC) on your system. It will not replace the missing service, but will scan for and attempt to repair other corruption that may be present.
If you were able to successfully restore the service using System Restore you will need to Check for updates to see if the issue has been resolved. If after you’ve restored the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) you continue to receive errors pertaining to this service I recommend that you run the BITS Repair Tool for Windows Vista (KB940520). However, please note that it will NOT run on a system that is missing the BITS service - so again this can only be run after you’re restored the service.

Well I eventually decided that it was time to do a clean install. This did resolve the issues I was having. I used the built in "Easy Transfer Service" to effectively send my entire C drive to the D drive (the program creates a single file that can transfer your settings and etc. from one computer running windows OS, to any other, and since I was using Samsung's recovery solution to do the clean install my D drive was safe from any sort of repercussions due to the clean install). Then after the clean install was completed and I had finished getting all the latest updates from Microsoft, I opened the Easy Transfer service back up, and used it to snag the file back from my D drive and apply it to my C drive. It workedextremely well, and after it was done, it even gave me a list of programs that I had settings and data for before the clean install, and told me which it had listed as already being installed and which still needed to be installed with links to a good number of the programs still needing to be installed. I got everything more or less reinstalled which is good, however I ran into a new problem after that.
My new problem is that almost all of my programs don't want to open and when launched do one of a few things:
-create a process visible in process explorer, but don't open a window or any other indication that the computer responded to my input
or
-opens a window and begins to start the application/program, but then immediately crashes and brings up a windows error message that reads, "(Title of error message=) -Program name-.exe has stopped working. ----Windows is checking for a solution for the problem.----(this part shows up for the first 2 to 3 seconds with a green loader bar, and then after that instead of that message+loader bar, it displays this message) ----A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program, and notify you if there is a solution available."
I found that I could avoid this by opening some programs (like google chrome) through the right click+run as administrator method, but that was a royal pain to be sure...
I searched all around the webs some more to find a solution and I may have found the cure. I've gone through and set everything on the C and D drives to be taken control of by new owner (selecting my user account (non-admin option, even though my account is the only account and I have full admin privileges...), and then granting full control to SYSTEM, my user account/admin, and my user account/normal).
---------Supposedly you can avoid this issue by setting the permissions (on any drive containing files you want to transfer) for Everyone, to Full Control, then transferring the data...
This seems to have solved most of the problem, though I still can't open Pandora like I should, but that might be a different problem... I'll let you know if I have any more issues...
Best of luck to those of you out there who still have the BITS problem, but at this point it does look like you have no choice to do a full clean install...

I have the exact same issue! I've searched all over the internet and MS knowledge base and find no solutions that work. I cannot reinstall BITS nor replace the missing files it;s asking for.
I too get this error when I attempt to start BITS
ERROR 2: The system could not find the file specified.
I'm wondering what has gone to town on my system files. I have done full scans with more than one antivirus and it seems the machine is clean enough at the moment. Any advice on how to get BITS reinstalled as service (and files replaced) would be awesome. I tried the installation disk and for some reason it thinks I'm running a different version of Windows 7 to the install disk - which is THE SAME DISK as I installed from?!? My restore points are all too recent (thanks to MS Fix It bumping all my old ones off the disk with more recent ones!)
Any help would be appreciated, or I'm going to have to rebuild the whole machine to fix a DLL - which I would rather avoid.
