Updates to Silverlight won't install and can't uninstall

tried updating critical update to silverlight kb97202

over 30 times won't install

kb974331 didn't either 28 times

uninstall silerlight failed 3 times

"This patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists and that you can access it, or contact the applications vendor to verify that this is a genuine Windows Installer patch package."

was referred to registry cleaner ;-(

    Uninstall was unsuccessful with the following error message: "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." The solution I found is to run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings, and then reinstall Office.

    I'm reluctant to do this because I do not have the installation CD for Office 2003 that is on my computer, but I do have the key.

    Also could not install an automatic update and received this error message: "Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB982926) could not be installed".

    When I tried to upgrade to Silverlight v.4, I was instructed to uninstall v.3, so I am back where I started.

    Can anybody help me out of this?
