Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    Reminder: The vast majority of critical security updates require a reboot. Your system will remain at-risk (i.e.,subject to the widely-exploited vulnerabilites being patched) unless & until you reboot!

    I know this is an old post but try this. 

    1. Close all Windows and Programs. 
    2. Press Alt + F4. 

    A little box (similar to that of an older version of windows) will appear with shut down options.  Select "Shutdown without installing updates."

    I don't know if this really shuts down without installing updates but it is worth a try. (My test run did some fishy things.)

    I think this following way can help

    go to

    Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc -> User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.

    There, you will find an option called “Do not adjust default option to ‘Install Updates And Shut Down’ in Shut Down Windows dialog box”. If you enable this, then clicking “Shut Down” will just shut down your computerwithout installing updates. However, the “Install Updates And Shut Down” option is still available in the little menu, in case you need it

    Another way... Select RESTART instead of shutdown. When you see the BIOS screen, press the power button to turn off. Unlike XP, Windows 7 shuts down quickly on the reboot, so this works well (unless you don't hit the power button on the BIOS screen, or as soon as the screen goes blank).
