Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    I was hoping for a temporary fix. I remember in XP there was a Shutdown without updates. in Vista was a separate shutdown option. It looks like an oversight on win 7. I work on computers at my company and hate having to wait for updates when i'm trying to install something.

    Download updates but let me choose whether to install them

    The installers for all Recommended updates (including driver updates) will download automatically but then you must approve which updates are installed and when they're install.

    [Yes, you can "hide" an update but its installer will remain in Downloads folder until it ages-out or your delete it.]

    You must approve which updates you want to install but once you've approved them, they will download and install automatically.

    [You can "hide" updates you don't want without downloading their installers to Downloads folder.]

    Neither Win7 nor Vista have WinXP's Notify Only option where you must approve which updates are downloaded and which updates are installed and when they're installed.

    On my laptop I cannot always let Windows install updates before shutting down so this is what I did:

    1. Click the Windows button.
    2. In the Search programs and files (Run) dialog box type "Shutdown" or more appropriately "Change what the power buttons do" then press Enter.
    3. Beside the option "When I press the power button:" change the option under Plugged In or Battery to Shut Down.
    4. Click Save Changes.

    If you press the power button it will shut down the computer and bypasses the updates. Hope this helps!
