Shutdown Win 7 without being forced to perform updates

The easiest way is to press <CTRL>-<Alt>-<Del> and to use the read button at the lower right corner. There you can select between "Shutdown" without installing the patches and "Stutdown with installing patches"

You can also go to your desktop (use Win+D if you need to get there fast), then click anywhere in a blank are of the desktop to make sure it has focus.  Then use Alt-F4 to see additional shutdown options.   Here is a place with additional options and pictures of the process:

It seems that the problem I had before the detailed clearance of my computer is either a new addition of updates or a repeat of 'don't power off,,,installing update 1 of 5' is back on my computer. How can I decide whether it's a repeat problem or a genuine updating? It is still on my screen after closing down.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

I have this update setting selected but still dont get the option to shutdown without installing updates.  The options are switch user, log off, lock restart, sleep.  Using Win 7 home premium on HP 610 all in one.

Trying all the run options in these posts says cant be found.
