Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    @lambit Appears only to be working in Win7 Professional. Not in Home Premium or lower.

    If you select the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option, you will be able to decide when downloaded updates are installed - then only Approve an update when you're willing and able to reboot (if need be).

    Tip: Assume an update will require a reboot so don't approve the install of any updates unless & until you're ready & willing to reboot.

    IMPORTANT! => Any change you make to your Automatic Updates (AU) setting now will NOT be applied to any updates already in the installation queue. As far as AU is concerned, you've already Approved such updates.

    One temporary solution that I utilize is the DOS shutdown command in the search prompt, basically the same as the run....

    shutdown -s -t 01

    This will shutdown the computer after 1 second.

    And no, this doesn't work EITHER. This will ALSO install the updates.

    So is there ANY workaround that is not a doesn't-work-around?
