Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

I have the Download updates but let me choose whether to install themoption set - I never allow any OS or Application to automatically apply updates. However, the Shutdown button still frequently changes to force me to apply updates when I shutdown. As stated by other people, this is extremely annoying when shutting down to take the laptop home on Friday evening.

I believe that this behaviour of changing the Shutdown Button to force apply updates started to appear after Skype became a Microsoft product and again started to apply updates of its own (again options set to let me choose when!)

Unfortunately, I cant change my work desktop OS (although I also spend a lot of time logged on to various Linux boxes) otherwise I would have dropped Windows a long time ago since they keep changing the UI to make it more difficult to use and to force people to do things the "Microsoft Way" I have been using Windows since Windows 1.0, and every version since! but recently (W7, Office 2007 onwards) it has become progressively more difficult to use, - W8 is a complete disaster - I know things are there but I can't find them on demand!
