Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    Just for Feedback,

    In migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7, I miss XP's option, where if updates were in the query before shutdown it would give you the option to shutdown without installing updates.  Now you have to have the updates install.  Than on Reboot, wait for configuration and any restarts to complete first.  I don't think this was in the best interest of Windows 7's design.

    In short:

     - click anywhere on the desktop (or press WINDOWS-D)

     - press ALT-F4

    This brings up the shutdown dialog (known from XP and older) containing these (and more) options:

     - Restart

     - Install updates and shut down

     - Shut down (without installing updates!)

     - some others...

    I have the Download updates but let me choose whether to install themoption set...However, the Shutdown button still frequently changes to force me to apply updates when I shutdown.

    Had you already approved the install of one or more updates when this happens and if so, were any of the Approved updates not already listed as successfully-installed in Update History?
