Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    i too have this problem and have tried the suggestions above, but it does not fix the problem. The only way i could shut down without updates was to go the long way.

    PRESS CTRL-ALT-DELETE TOGETHER AND  ON THE NEXT SCREEN YOU WILL SEE THE POWER BUTTON AND AN ARROW BESIDE IT. CLICK THE ARROW, CHOOSE SHUT DOWN AND IT WILL SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER NORMALLY.

    Although this works, it is annoying to have to go through all that just to shut down my computer. I think i would've preferred to stay with Windows XP =(

    I know this is an old thread, but it was one of the first results I found when searching for a way to prevent Windows 7 from changing the shutdown option to "shutdown and install updates".  You can add the following registry key to prevent this:

    Under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

    Add "NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption" as DWORD with value 1.

    Once you reboot the "shutdown" button will never be changed by Windows Update from your default action to "shutdown and install updates".

    Also VERY important is "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers", also a DWORD in the same location with value 1.  This prevents Windows from rebooting while you left it working overnight (or anytime).
