Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    I know this is an old post but try this. 

    1. Close all Windows and Programs. 
    2. Press Alt + F4. 

    A little box (similar to that of an older version of windows) will appear with shut down options.  Select "Shutdown without installing updates."

    I don't know if this really shuts down without installing updates but it is worth a try. (My test run did some fishy things.)

    Reminder: The vast majority of critical security updates require a reboot. Your system will remain at-risk (i.e.,subject to the widely-exploited vulnerabilites being patched) unless & until you reboot!

    There have been loads of times when updates are ready but i want the computer / laptop off and ready to move asap (to go home from work and take my laptop with me). was so annoying having to wait for windows to update when i didn’t want to.

    I have found a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates…

    Run regedit (search in start menu)

    Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

    if the keys “WindowsUpdate” and “AU” aren’t there just add them (right click > New > Key)

    right click > New > DWORD

    name it “NoAUAsDefaultShutdownOption” double click it and enter value 1.

    the “shutdown” button will never be changed by Windows Update from your default action to “shutdown and install updates”.

    If updates are ready to be installed “shutdown and install updates” is instead displayed in the [>] menu to the side of the shutdown button

    I just turn off the power at the mains switch. If the OS can't cope then it is not fit for purpose.

    Sometimes, I just need to shut down the laptop and go. That requires a 4s press of the off button.

    If we all did this, MS might actually start to listen.
