Window 7 will can not Backup or let me do a system image backup.

I did complete fresh new install of windows 7 ultimate x64 and it does the same thing. I can not make any system backup and I get the same error that you all get. Microsoft BS a resolution instead of resolving the issue. unfortunately I decided to give up after spending weeks to figured out if there is any solution other than using 3rd party software.

I have eight copies of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  I was successfully using the Microsoft backup program for about three months but in recent times it has failed on every machine.  I have stopped using Acronis as I was not sure if it was sufficiently reliable for the task and swapped to using what is already included with Windows 7.  I am not sure if this has been unintentionally disabled but at this stage, I am running my business "commando" as they say as I cannot be bothered to reinstall Acronis.  I expect Microsoft will conveniently ignore these types of concerns as it has developed a culture of its customers expecting their systems to crash or freeze every day and this gets washed into the mix.  Now may be a good time to think about the beauty of using Snow Leopard or another version of Linux - my Debian system is so stable it scares me at times as to why we all have let Microsoft charge such outrageous prices for garbageware.

The back-up utility in the way that it performs the process is flawed. You can follow some simple instruction to get things started again.

In windows 7, there are really two types of processes that are being performed, the system image, and the back-up process itself. When the back-up process begins, the system attempts to also generate a system image. This procedure is placed in que until after the back-up process has been completed.

Issue: Back-up Fails with Unexplained Errors

Cause: System Image procedure generates recursive back-up process resulting in Divide Override or Buffer Overflow. The recursive process results in memory flooding.

Solution: Change the back-up setting to: Let Me Choose. Select all that is necessary for the back-up process, but leave |generate system image| unchecked. Run |create a system image| as a separate process...normally existing as a separate option when back-up is initiated.

Result: Two separate processes will be initiated. The back-up, and then the system image.

Advice: Create a system image first, and then run the back-up procedure.

Is it possible you have put third party recording software on your system? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315255 says it only works on Win 7 so I am guessing the Win 7 disk burning software is new enough that older technologies on third party software interfere with the way a disk should actually work.  But it is new and chances are it is wonky and won't work quite right until a service pack is out.  Don't quote me on it, and don't give up if you can afford to waste DVD's.   

No one has mentioned this but there may be a way to turn off the file checking on the Windows backup software so that it won't fail on what it considers to be a bad cluster.
