Window 7 will can not Backup or let me do a system image backup.

I have just upgraded to Windows 7, but when I try to do a complete backup or system backup, it fails.

I started to do a full backup to dvd, it took hours and stopped  at 84%,  I also tried to backup with system image, but this faild,  I tried to backup to an external drive 80GB drive and window said this wasn’t big enough.

Why cant I  backup Windows 7.

    I finally got Backup to not only run but complete. I also created a system image as well. I followed morrierudy's idea. I deleted all restore points and increased the amount of space used for restore points to 5% (mine was set at 3%). I created a new restore point then ran Windows backup and it worked!! Not only did it work but now the volume shadow is present on both the internal harddrive and my external hard drive. My system image is on the external hard drive. I still use Hewlett packard's software for everyday backup on the external hard drive (it came with the drive ). I still haven't tried to run disk check to see if I still have any reparse points on the drive. I let you know. Keep in mind that I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit edition.

    There is another "real" fix from someone else.

    By increasing the Usage, it just eats up disk space, unless that was your problem with no "Max" set.

    I finally deleted "all restore points" at the same tab as above, then "Create" a restore point right now Button, then reduced my Max down to 5% and has been working just fine.

    There seemed to be one OLD check point that would never get deleted automatically and free up the space. Computer>OS>Properties>Restore Previous Versions - look at the list.

    I had one OLD ONE setting there all by its self that I believe was the issue.

    Here is what I did and it appears to work but who knows!!!!   B A C K G R O UN D

    I purchased this lap top 4/5 months ago and had no issues with any type of backup, scheduled or otherwise. The Last good backup was on 12/26/2010, I do one scheduled each week and full and others whenever.

    Starting on Jan 2, 2011 the scheduled backup ran for 10 hours and the got the dialog box about the” The backup was not successful. The error is: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Please check in the event logs for any relevant errors. (0x81000037)”

     B U T

    I did press the details button and I believe it said the “shadow copy was corrupt”, I left this in the back of my mind!!!

    When thru most of the postings for error ‘(0x81000037)’ with REAL NO RESELUTIONS,,, So I remembered something about SPACE for windows.

    #1 START -> Control Panel -> System -> Change Settings -> System Protection -> Configure and Changed my 10% Max Usage to 15% -> Apply and back out.

    #2 don’t know if it was required but I turned off schedule in backup and restore.

    #3 Ran a full backup with no issues, 2 1 / 2 DVDs

    #4 set up a schedule for 10:00 PM tonight and it completed within its normal time frame of 10 minutes “changes only”, just a PLAY machine.

    Give it a try and see if it works for you. There may be an issue with NOT deleted older files from the volume but MAYBE just MAYBE if this works then Microsoft can find the real issue.
