Microsoft Edge closes immediately upon opening. I've tried many fixes none work.

Yesterday, I wanted to clean up my favorites in Edge (remove duplicates, remove obsolete links). In the midst of this, Edge closed without warning or error message. When I restarted Edge, it closed immediately. I could not select the three dots in the top right. It closed too quickly.

I found several possible solutions including tools in the Settings/Apps menu, other fixes involving removing and then reinstituting the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory

None of these fixes worked.

When I restart Edge, it closes immediately.

How can I get it to work properly?

I posted below separately, but this worked for me

Had the same issue, but resolved it by looking at the extensions that were updated.

    Go to C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extensions

    Sort folder by "Date Modified"

If you see one that has been modified recently - for me, last night - it may be the cause. The names of these folders won't make any sense, and I couldn't tell you what the extension was, however for me I took a copy of the following folder then deleted it. Edge restarted ok

    cjpijioncddkancpiedagilpojbgmoni

After starting edge, the above folder was re-instated.

ALWAYS TAKE A COPY of the folder so you can reinstate it if you need.

I suppose I should feel a little better as it is not just me having this problem and I have tried all the simple solutions e.g modify repair but nothing works and then I fall at the first hurdle with Go to C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extensions as after clicking on my name there is no option APPData

Also where would I go to try this suggestion %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory

I am not a technical person so suggestions I have seen such as looking at the registry I stay well away from as I don't want to make matters worse!

I would be happy to just use chrome but all my bookmarks are in edge not being able to access these is what is really stressing me out. Any help gratefully received.

In File Explorer select view/show/hidden files and app data should appear.
