Yesterday, I wanted to clean up my favorites in Edge (remove duplicates, remove obsolete links). In the midst of this, Edge closed without warning or error message. When I restarted Edge, it closed immediately. I could not select the three dots in the top right. It closed too quickly.
I found several possible solutions including tools in the Settings/Apps menu, other fixes involving removing and then reinstituting the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory
None of these fixes worked.
When I restart Edge, it closes immediately.

I attempted all of these steps - multiple times - without any result, both with and without restarting as well.
Also updated system.
There were no Edge processes running and I verified that the files were deleted. As soon as I tried Edge again, the files were recreated, but Edge still closed immediately.
I fixed it by doing this:
Go to C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
Change default to default.old

This was the last resort that actually resolved the issue. I had a dell update done to the system and after that update this issue started. Before I deleted the latest extension I downloaded Firefox and imported all the favorites along with the passwords. Once all was working I removed the extension that was created on 11/7. After its removal, Edge loaded without an issue of shutting down. The file name that was removed was recreated. When Edge loaded it was the default view with all the news and advertising. I then checked the extensions in Edge and the One for Norton Safe Search was corrupted. Once I repaired it all was back to normal . The page now loads with Norton Safe Search and not the default Edge screen,
Thanks for trying to help - but only one folder in extensions and deleting it has no effect.
