Troubleshooting browser crashes or performance issues on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Yesterday, I wanted to clean up my favorites in Edge (remove duplicates, remove obsolete links). In the midst of this, Edge closed without warning or error message. When I restarted Edge, it closed immediately. I could not select the three dots in the top right. It closed too quickly.
I found several possible solutions including tools in the Settings/Apps menu, other fixes involving removing and then reinstituting the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory
None of these fixes worked.
When I restart Edge, it closes immediately.
How can I get it to work properly?

I am having this same problem today. I have tried all options, but nothing worked. Does Microsoft or anyone have any other suggestions? I cannot even uninstall EDGE (so that I can reinstall afresh).
Tried everything shown in these messages, but Edge still closes immediately after opening:
sfc /scannow
DISM.exe /Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Deleting the files in the dir shown above.
Disk Cleanup both regular and system
Settings, Apps, MS Bing, modify, repair
CCleaner custom clean + Registry
I don't know if this is relevant, but it started immediately after installing the latest TeamViewer update. Dunno. ;-(
Perhaps someone knows the PowerShell commands to force a reinstall of Edge?
Hi Marc,
That option worked smoothly for me. You might want to reach out to the guy who made the video. He may have some other ideas.
Hello Victor
Unfortunately I could not rename the file "default_old" . See your video: install edge afresh. See link below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwhcYkLfp2Q Message came: file in use.
Even after restarting the computer and not starting edge, it didn't let me rename it.
I assume another program, maybe "Symantec" is using it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Marc
I agree with you that these methods don't work. It's like they are just throwing SOPs at us without listening to the exact problem.
I saw this fantastic video that helped me solve this issue. The process is a bit convoluted but if you slow it down and follow the procedure diligently, it will solve your challenge. Basically it nutmegs the existing edge and allow you to install edge afresh. See link below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwhcYkLfp2Q
