Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

Setting these two group policies for computer and user AND uninstalling the (new) Outlook app that I recently installed fixed this issue for me on Windows 11. Edge was persistent and the process was opening again after closing until I uninstalled Outlook.

UPD: Nope, Edge started reappearing again.

Thank you Pedro! Don't understand why Microsoft makes it so difficult to shut down a browser. I had everything shut off in the Edge settings yet it still would be running in the background after I closed it. Your procedure to shut it down works! Makes you wonder why Edge is so hard to shut down...No other browser I have used is like that.

Ok so I succeeded in stopping edge with instructions from this thread, however I found that the settings have mysteriously re-enabled themselves... tut tut.

Probably from an update but seems odd that a group policy setting would change following updates.

    Sneaky.

Microsoft Edge Chromium will run in the background on Windows in

task manager if any one of the streaming services is left running.

Besides everything mentioned already in this post, check the streaming

services apps and make sure that "all settings" - background apps

are disabled for each of these services. Here is the app list to check:

    SlingTV app

    YoutubeTV

    FuboTV

    DirecTV Stream

    PrimeVideo Amazon

    Paramount+

    Peacock

    Disney+

    Hulu+LiveTV

    ESPN+

    PlutoTV

    TubiTV
