This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Hi All,
I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."
I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.
All of a sudden Edge keeps running.
Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:
(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"
In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.
Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.
Any suggestions?
I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.
PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear
when shutting Edge down.
Thanks

Hi,
please have a look at my processes... Edge under 0.5% with two major websites open.
I have no idea why you have all these things running.
I also have the same Edge version.
My Windows version is also 22H2 in Win10 ... however in Win11 its 23H2.
I would start a post asking about unusual resource usage...?
Cheers
Well the latest Edge update seems to have made things worse.
Not only do the tasks continue after closing...now there is more system CPU usage than before both when Edge is open and after it is closed.
So much usage my fan speed increases significantly after just a few seconds of opening Edge and continues to run fast long after closing edge.
When I kill Edge in task manager, 2 seconds later the fan speed drops.
Well that about does it for me.
I have switched over to Chrome.
Maybe I'll give Edge another try in a few months.
You described my symptoms very well. Ditto! That was the greatest selling feature of EDGE - that it deletes what I choose and choose Not when I close the browser. And, I fear, that Edge is STILL saving every Browsing, History, Cache and Cookies in separate 'ghost' files. It's MONEY they care about.
Microsoft Edge continues to run in the background because it provides internet services to other parts of Windows and to Microsoft Store.
This isn't hard to understand. If you wrote an operating system that depended on contacting the internet, would you be happy to let your arch rival provide those internet services? I don't think so. I think you'd want to make sure that it's your browser that you control that's providing internet services for your operating system and your app store.
That's why the back end of Microsoft Edge (the technical part, without the user interface) continues to appear in Task Manager, even when you aren't actually using the browser yourself.
For all other use of the internet - web browsing, email, social media, YouTube, etc. - you are free to use any browser, and to make that browser your default. For me, that's Google Chrome.
Hi all (DJK999, Rosco, Chien Sage) and thanks for your ideas just above.
Quick comments:
For me there is no reason to switch to another browser - Edge is very good and integrated. And there are various tweaks in Edge Settings, Windows Settings, Services, Task Manager and Registry to keep Microsoft's increased "big brother attitude" under control.
I have a whole list available but was also posted further up.
Regardless, please keep bombarding Microsoft via Feedback Hub with your concerns.
Cheers
